“No,” he teased, kissing my cheek. “Tell me again.”

All the anxietythat had melted away after a quiet evening with Elijah returned as soon as my shift ended the next day.

I hadn’t told Skylar or Kaden about the potential pregnancy. There was no use in counting my chickens before they hatched, and the thought of other people getting their hopes up only to watch them fall if it turned out I really was infertile was just too much to bear.

No, this would be a secret until I knew the truth.

Since the café was close to our home, I walked. Elijah had offered for the chauffeur to drive me to and from work a couple times, but I always turned it down, thinking it was silly to drive whole five minutes when the walk was twenty. Besides, the late spring air was crisp and wonderful.

The only thing I didn’t like about the walk was a strange itching feeling on the back of my neck, almost like someone kept looking at me.

Of course people are looking at you,I told myself. It’s a nice spring day on Main street, for god’s sake. There’s a ton of people out and about.

Ignoring the feeling, I hastened my pace. Elijah was waiting for me at home with the pregnancy test and the sooner we found out the results, the better. Ever since Elijah suggested I might be fertile after all, I wished constantly that he was right. The test would give me the answers and finality I craved.

“There you are, baby,” Elijah said excitedly when I got home. He greeted me at the door with a kiss and ushered me inside. “Come on. I got a treat for you.”

“Is the treat a pregnancy test?” I asked, amused.

He grinned. “Well, yeah. But I also got you a whole container of ice cream. Mint chocolate chip.”

I flipped the light on in the bathroom. The test was waiting for me on the counter. I stared at it like it was a poised rattlesnake.

“I’ll be waiting out here,” Elijah commented.

He left me alone with the test--and then the full reality hit me.

After thinking I was infertile for so long, there existed a tiny possibility that there was a baby inside of me.

My mind blanked as I grabbed the test and ripped it open from the box. With my body running on autopilot, I performed the actions mindlessly, then paced around the room waiting for the results.

I was so anxious and excited I could’ve thrown up.

The timer I set on my phone chimed, indicating the test should be done by now. I nearly jumped out of my skin at the sound.

I grabbed the test.

Then I screamed for Elijah.

My mate burst through the door wildly. “What? Where are you, Felix?”

I threw myself into his arms so he wouldn’t trip over anything in the commotion. “Here!”

“Why did you scream? What’s happening?”

I steadied myself and whimpered, “I’m pregnant!”
