“Open your mouth.” Her voice was breathy.

I leaned down slowly, bringing my face close to hers, and popped open my mouth so she could get her sample. Scott swabbed the inside of my cheek and avoided all eye contact. With the sample collected, she slipped past me to the trolley and stashed them away.

“So,” I said, turning slowly and watching her. “Are you going to tell me where and when?”

Scott took a deep breath. “Keep your hands to yourself from now on or I swear I’m going to cut them off.”

She was wholly unaware, and I was becoming more attuned to how much her feisty nature turned me on as much as it irritated me.

Grabbing my shirt, I slipped it on and buttoned it up as she led us out of the room.

“Scott,” I said.

She waved a hand at me dismissively, which pissed me off, and disappeared into the room that housed the lab freezers.

Holden walked into the lab. And although I’d been due back atMurphy’s, I decided I could stay at the institute a little while longer.

There was nothing more infuriating than the way Scott wouldn’t give me the time to speak to her properly but would let Holden hover so close when she clearly didn’t desire him in the same way.

She sat at the bench, working, whilst Holden sat opposite her, looking through files. I was certain that they had assigned him an office for this sort of work.

“The other day, I wanted to ask you something,” Holden said to her quietly.

“Hmm?” Scott said, half paying attention to him. She was pipetting samples into a plate with precision and kept her focus on her work.

“Quentin.”

The use of her given name caught her attention, and I watched from across the room, wondering why she preferred the use of Scott.

Holden hesitated, and I leaned forward in my seat, watching them with curiosity. I was across the lab, but kept an eye on the pair since Holden walked in. It sparked a deep pleasure to see she’d barely paid him any attention when he preened like a peacock for her.

“I’d like to take you out to dinner,” Holden said, eyes fixed on her.

“Sure,” Scott replied, continuing to work.

I bit back on a laugh. She’d completely disregarded his intention, and her focus was purely on the job in hand. Holden rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly and I pondered how much she’d disregard Holden once I’d shown her what it was like to be with a God. I’d ruin her for life; forever unsatisfied by a mortal because she’d tasted divinity.

“As a date,” Holden clarified. “I would like to take you on a date.”

Scott completely missed the well that she’d meant to pipette into and finally looked up at him. Holden missed the momentary glance that fell on me before she pulled her attention back to the mortal.

She knew as well as I did where her interest laid in the room. My lips stretched into a half smile to see how much Holden had missed the mark. I leaned back in my seat, ready to enjoy the moment he was shot down. There was no competition.

“Sure,” Scott said after a few moments of silence. “A date. I… Yes.”

I straightened up in the chair.

What was she doing?

Why was she agreeing to this?

“Tonight?” Holden asked hopefully.

“Why not?” she said, not quite meeting his enthusiasm.

The hesitation caused me to narrow my eyes.

“When will you finish here?” Holden asked.
