“Another thirty minutes or so.”
“Okay.” He nodded. “I’ll head back now and when you get home, we can decide on a place.”
“Sounds like a plan.”
“I’ll see you back at the house.”
Holden left the lab with an imbecilic grin spread wide across his face, and Scott turned back to her work. As I rose from the chair and crossed the space towards her, my aura bubbled at my fingertips.
“Are you trying to make me jealous, Scott?” I hissed, standing beside her. “That’s a very unwise decision.”
A tendril of my aura snaked its way up her body and tugged her chin, so she was forced to focus on me.
Scott huffed out a breath, dark eyes focusing on the tip of my nose. “Why on earth would I try to make you jealous?”
I dropped the aura from her, but it stayed around me. There were a few curious glances our way, but no one seemed to possess the courage to come over and question us.
“Because you were jealous last night,” I told her.
She let out a harsh laugh before finishing the last well and picking up the plate. Scott moved past me to get to the incubators.
“You want me to believe you have a genuine interest in that sorry excuse of a man?” I asked, echoing her footsteps. “Even by mortal standards, he’s pathetic.”
“Everyone is pathetic to you, aren’t they, Grayson?” There was a bite in her voice, and I sensed the anger building in her. Scott closed the door to the incubator and turned to face me.
“I think your kind are more prone to weaknesses,” I told her matter-of-factly.
“Well, we all can’t be as perfect as you,” she quipped, rolling her eyes and folding her arms across her chest.
When I stepped forward, she moved back — our usual tango of moves. I couldn’t deny the pull I felt towards her. The kiss yesterday had pulled at a stray thread that unravelled my plans of wanting to destroy her and had replaced it with a want for her. I needed to get Scott out of my system.
“Personal space, Grayson.”
I took yet another step towards her, and she dropped her arms from her chest and held them up in front of her. I took one in my own, twisting and pinning it behind her back, drawing her body against mine. The thumb of my free hand ran across her plump bottom lip and her breath hitched.
“Stop,” she whispered.
“I don’t believe I’m doing anything,” I said in the same hushed tone. I leaned down and she swallowed hard. “Ask,” I told her. “All you need to do is ask and I’ll give you everything you desire.”
Her free hand balled into a fist and slammed into my chest. I let go of her instantly and Scott moved away quickly, striding across the lab to get some space.
“You’re desperate for my touch yet you will not beg for it.”
I moved to join her as she threw her belongings into her bag. Apparently, any lab work she had planned was no longer important.
“I’m leaving, Gray,” she told me, hitching her bag over her shoulder. “Find your own way home.”
Watching her go, I muttered to myself, “You are so proud, Scott. So foolish and stubborn. But I will find a way to break you.”
That self-centred, arrogant son of a bitch.
Jealous?
I hadn’t been jealous of seeing him with some other woman. And I certainly wasn’t playing petty games of trying to make him jealous. Why wasn’t I allowed to have a genuine interest in Matthew? Matthew was… nice.
“Home early?” Matt asked as I got in. He was on the sofa, scrolling through his phone.
“Yeah. Work wasn’t pressing. It would have been rude to keep you waiting. Let me get changed and then we can go.”
