“Did you eat?” I asked him.

Lyric leaned in close and whispered in my ear. “Not yet but now that you’re here I think I’m hungry for something else.” A shudder whipped through me.

I whispered back. “Then why did you leave my bed?” I asked.

“Good point. It was a mistake I will try not to make again, but you were sleeping so peacefully and I heard everyone getting up.”

Guilt hit me in the gut. It was my job to take care of my family, not Lyric’s. I didn’t want him to think he had to bring food, cook food, and protect us. Sure it was sweet and more reasons why I liked him, but there were a million others.

“Stop worrying that pretty little head of yours, Red. I wanted to do this for you guys. Now go sit and then maybe you can join me in the shower later,” he said quietly.

Damn. Why had I showered? “I already took one.”

He waggled his eyebrows up and down suggestively. “Maybe I will have to get you dirty again.”

It was a good thing my family couldn’t hear us.

“I guess if I’m dirty then a shower would be in order,” I said seductively.

Then I turned and started to walk away. Lyric smacked my ass with the palm of his hand and I yelped.

Gramps and Jett started laughing.

Lyric fit right in. It was as if he was already part of the family.

Please don’t let him leave.

My heart couldn’t take it if he walked away.

He came up behind me and placed his hands on my hips. Leaning once again into my ear, speaking softly he said, “I’m not going anywhere, sweetheart.”

I don’t know how he always knew what I was thinking but it was scary in a good way. I pressed back against him letting his warmth seep into me.

It was damn good to hear because I think I was falling in love.

ChapterEleven

LYRIC

Showering with Rubywas added to my list of favorite things to do.

It wasn’t sexual but intimate and it had been amazing.

However, when she curiously asked me if I had showered with many women, things changed. I wasn't going to lie and I made that clear to her right then and there.

When I told her I’d been engaged, she gasped and went stiff in my arms. I prayed it wouldn’t ruin things between us. Ruby was a bit skittish when it came to matters of the heart and I knew from things she told me, as well as how she acted, that she was watchful when it came to men. Or with anyone for that matter.

But Ruby was a remarkable human being and she listened thoughtfully to the story about my high school sweetheart whom I asked to marry me before going into the military, only to come back and find out she’d been cheating on me. It wasn’t something I could ever forgive and the relationship was over the instant I found out about her betrayal.

I never wanted to go through that again, but it hadn’t turned me against a relationship in the future, I had just never found anyone I wanted to walk that path with again until now.

And while I spilled my guts and the water turned cold, there was still heat all around us. It was burning off the naked woman in my arms who was livid on my behalf about what I’d been through.

“I’d like to give her a piece of my mind,” Ruby said, venom in her tone.

I couldn’t help but chuckle.

“What’s funny? She is, she’s a, ugh, I’m trying not to be mean here Lyric. But your ex is a bitch.” She huffed. “There I said it.”
