I roared with laughter.
“You’re cute.” I kissed the side of her neck. “ And sweet.” I kissed her nose. “Let’s not leave out the fact you are sexy as hell.” Then I took her mouth with mine.
When we broke the kiss, she was smiling.
“You know what?” she asked but didn’t let me answer. “I don’t like what she did to you but her loss is my gain and you are the best man I know, Lyric Knight. Shh, don’t tell my grandpa or Jett,” she said in a mock whisper.
It was right then and there I realized I was in love with Ruby.
ChapterTwelve
RUBY
Lyric was gettingthe raw end of the deal.
I knew he didn’t see it that way but I couldn’t help but think about everything he’d been doing for me. He was there for me when I needed him most and the man was wicked with his tongue.
When we’d gone to shower I had every intention of showing him how good I could make him feel just as he had with me in the early hours of the morning, but the conversation between us had changed the course of our time together.
And while I was disappointed, I wasn’t sorry because what I had learned made me understand Lyric even more and knowing more about his past would bring us closer together. A bout of fear raced through me at the thought of getting so close to someone.
But it wasn’t just someone, it was Lyric.
I couldn’t walk away from him if I tried.
So instead, after we got out of the shower and were wrapped in our fuzzy white towels standing in my bedroom, I walked toward him, intent on showing him exactly how he made me feel.
Just as I reached Lyric and pulled the towel from his hips, his phone rang.
“Shit, that’s my work phone. I have to grab it, sweetheart.” He picked the towel back up and wrapped it back around him.
I sighed, losing sight of the goods I had revealed and hadn’t gotten a chance to explore.
“Sorry about that. I have to take off,” he said as he quickly pulled his clothes on. “There is an emergency and they need all the people they can bring in right now.”
His job was important and I understood that. If he had to go, he had to go. But as Lyric walked back up into my personal space his eyes held a wary look. Was he concerned I was going to be mad and not understand? The last thing I wanted him to do when he needed to be paying attention and staying safe was worrying I would be mad.
I reached up and touched his arm. “I get it, I’m not upset, Lyric. Just promise me one thing.”
“I will do my best to do anything I can. That I can promise.”
Life was full of surprises, twists, and turns, so I could see how he would be careful about promising anything.
“Try and stay safe,” I told him. Then I took my hand from his arm and placed both my arms around his neck. “And come back when you can. We have unfinished business.”
His sexy smile made my heart tumble over into another territory. I was teetering on the edge of falling for this man in a way I never thought possible.
“I can do that.” He leaned in and our lips met in a tender kiss. It was over way too soon but I knew he needed to go. “Will I like this unfinished business?” he asked.
I giggled. “You’re going to love it.”
His eyes warmed and he looked like he was about to say something and then changed his mind. “I’ll be back as soon as I can, Red.”
He gave me another quick kiss and I dropped my arms from around him. I stared at him longingly as he headed toward the bedroom door.
Before he walked out he glanced back over his shoulder. “I’ll miss you.” He didn’t wait for a reply and then he was gone.
My heart fluttered.
