“You know we would have been here for you.”
“I know, but I didn’t know how to be there for myself. I still don’t, but now I don’t really have a choice in the matter. Drew is in town and plans to stay and you can only hide a baby for so long till someone starts asking questions.”
“You need to tell him sooner rather than later,” Monica suggested.
“I know this.”
“Tomorrow,” Celeste demanded.
“I just told you two and that was hard enough.”
“We should have been the easy ones, Tabs.” Monica’s voice sounded worried and I knew they were both probably plotting on how to make this better. I wouldn’t doubt that I would find furniture and baby clothes in my new house by the end of the week.
“I know and I’m sorry I didn’t tell you guys sooner.”
“You have nothing to be sorry for. Just let us help. Celeste will work on the decorations for the house and the baby shower and I’ll work on actually filling the house with what you need.”
“You guys.” Tears formed in my eyes and one slipped out, running down the side of my face. These girls were my world.
“I don’t care if Talon comes into town this week. He comes second to you.”
“What’s up with you two anyways?” I asked Monica, trying to change the subject, but Celeste was not having it.
“We are not talking about the Italian hottie. We are talking about what you are going to say to Drew tomorrow.”
“I guess I’m just going to have to spit it out and tell him.”
“I wouldn’t let that be thefirstthing you say to him, ease him into it, but yes, you should do it earlier than later tomorrow. Do you have a way to get ahold of him?”
I reached into my pocked and pulled out the business card Drew had handed me at the end of our lunch. He’d said he’d see me tomorrow, but if I wanted to see him sooner, to give him a call.
“I have his number now.”
“Good. Call him, Tabitha.”
“I will.”
“Now.” It was Celeste’s last demand before the line went dead. I stared down at my phone, hoping the girls would call back and that it was just a mistake that they hung up. But after five minutes of nothing, I was starting to regret telling them I had Drew’s number. Because looking at the clock and seeing it be almost ten at night, I knew I had to call him now in order to meet him early in the morning.
I typed in the number and then deleted it. I’m pretty sure I did that almost five times before I let it ring once and then hung up. I hoped it hadn’t gone through, but the second I saw the number flash on my screen I knew I was in deep shit.
“Hello?” I answered, hoping that maybe I had called the wrong number.
“Why did you hang up?” Drew’s voice carried through the phone. Instead of the anxiety I had been feeling, a sense of calm overcame me. Knowing Drew was there settled me.
“I got scared.” I was honest with him.
“Never be scared with me, bug.”
I rolled over on my side and held the phone to my ear.
“Why did you call?”
“I wanted to see you tomorrow morning.”
“Tell me where and when and I’ll be there.”
I chuckled at his enthusiasm. He was probably sitting up in bed or on the edge of a chair if he was sitting. There was probably a bright smile on his face that reached his eyes. He was always so vibrant when he was excited and I think that’s what always drew me toward Drew. He was this fun and exciting man where I was a free-spirited girl. We clicked in ways I wouldn’t have expected.
