“I asked him that. He said that, that weekend meant something to him and when I left, he wanted to make sure I was okay.”

“See! That’s sweet!”

“Shush. Okay, that may be sweet in some way, but still, it’s creepy.”

“Not really.” I shrugged to myself even though they couldn’t see me. “I’ve grown up with having security and even my cell phone tapped. Nothing these days surprises me and I know just how easy it is to get ahold of information about me. I’m the senator’s daughter, it’s not like I can live under a rock.”

“That’s true, but having some privacy would have been nice. Him actually getting to know you rather than learning it all through the Internet would have been ideal.”

“I know this, but he kind of just showed up.”

“Where at?”

“The house.”

“Your parents’ house?” Both Celeste and Monica screamed the question in unison and the laugh that burst out of me was the first time today that I felt like I was showing my true emotions.

“No, the new house. He stepped in for our realtor to bring us the final paperwork to sign.”

“So, he knew you were going to be there.”

“Yes.”

“See, that still bothers me.”

I knew this was going to be a hard one to get past Celeste, but I knew the next thing I was about to tell them was going to send it all over the edge.

“That’s not everything.”

The other side of the line was silent, which wasn’t like the girls, but the fact I was laying this all on them now meant something. I didn’t normally open up like this. The girls typically had to pry it out of me, but I had to be forthcoming with this or else I would never be able to get it out of my mouth.

“Speak.” The command came from Monica this time.

“Well, I don’t know how to say it.” I rolled on my back and stared at the ceiling. This was it. I was about to tell my best friends I was three months pregnant.

“Spit it out, woman.”

“I’m pregnant.”

Crickets was all I heard coming from the other end of the phone. I even picked it up to see if maybe it had disconnected, but nope, the line was still there and neither Monica nor Celeste was talking.

“It’s Drew’s.”

“Well, no shit, Monica.”

“Hey! Don’t be like that, she could have had sex with someone else.”

“Yeah, but then she wouldn’t be bringing up Drew to us too.”

“You two done?” I interjected with a chuckle.

“No,” they both said.

“Listen.” I waited to see if either of them started to talk again. “It’s Drew’s and he knows nothing about it. But he started talking today about us being together and even him moving here, so I have to tell him, I just don’t know how to.”

“Why didn’t you tell us sooner?” Celeste questioned.

“I didn’t know how to.” My voice was small as I whispered the answer to her. “I found out two months ago and when my parents found out they kept it quiet.”
