“Just a hunch.” He chuckled and squeezed my hand. I forgot he still had ahold of it. “I race cars.”
“Like, professionally?” I wasn’t much for sports, but I’d heard of race car driving. Cars went around in circles for hours. It didn’t sound like much fun.
“Yeah, sugar, professionally.” He lifted my hand and kissed my knuckles.
“You must be pretty good.”
“I’m no rookie.” He gave me a wink. “What else you got for me?”
I placed my free hand on my chin to think about what else I could ask, because everything I’d planned left my head the moment I sat down in this chair. There was just something about Law that made me want to just wing it and not plan it all out.
“Favorite color?”
“Green, you?”
“Yellow.”
“Favorite genre of movie?” Law asked.
“I thought I was supposed to ask the questions here.” I raised an eyebrow at him.
“Just answer the question.” Law laughed at me.
“Fine, I love romantic comedies.”
He scrunched his nose and I knew I’d hit a sore spot.
“Not a fan?” I asked.
“Not particularly.” He shook his head.
“Then what do you like?”
“Horror.” He nodded with his answer, like there was nothing wrong with purposefully putting yourself through a movie, just to be scared shitless.
“Nope.” My only answer to that kind of admission.
“Oh, come on, they aren’t that bad.” Law tried to wager with me.
“Not happening.” I shook my head, even though the smile on my face was giving away that he could probably talk me into doing anything.
“Not even if I hold you and protect you from the monsters?” Law moved closer to me now, his head only a few inches from mine. There was more to this question than I was up for answering right at this moment. I pulled my hand from Law’s and turn back to facing the screens.
I watched out of the corner of my eye as he reached for the remote and hit a button, causing the screens around us to change to different constellations.
“You know, I’ve never been able to see the stars this clearly out here.” I looked around the room, admiring the projection, in light of not having the real thing.
“Where I’m from I get to see them every night.”
“And where might that be?” I asked, still staring off into space. Law’s hand came to my chin and tilted my head back to him. A tiny gasp escaped me when I saw the look on Law’s face. The seriousness that was planted there, like he didn’t like not being able to see me.
“That’s better.”
I blushed at Law’s words, forgetting he had asked me to face him when I asked a question. His assertiveness was something I was used to with Anne, but with a man, I had never thought I would want someone to take control. To show me what he wanted and what I could offer him.
“Now ask me again.”
I took a few shallow breaths before having the courage to ask my question again. This man was overbearing in ways I’d never expected a man to be, but somehow in the sweetest way possible.
