I notice a few glances from some guys, but I think everyone’s checking out Mikey, which doesn’t surprise me.
“Why couldn't you do this with Scott before?” Mikey asks Jordan.
“I mean, I love you Scott, but I've still been coming to terms with all of this. Really it wasn't until Belize that I figured out a lot of shit. That so-called ‘girl’ I met when I was there, that was actually a dude. That’s the person I’m going to see up in Asheville this weekend, after we do the big reveal with Kate. His name’s Brian. We've been talking and texting since I got back.”
“That's really cool,” Mikey says.
It's nice seeing how supportive he is of his brother. That despite how we were both totally thrown, he can shake all of that off and still manage to say the right things to him.
“And Scott’s been so busy,” Jordan continues, “that we haven't really spent a lot of time together. I mean, I guess now I know why he's really been spending so much time working on this house. So are we going to tell Kate right away, or do you want to wait?”
“What?” Mikey asks.
“I think it would be kind of cool if we could keep the secret a little bit longer so that I can be in on it.”
“That's ridiculous,” I say.
“Yeah. Yeah. You're right. That’s weird to say, isn’t it? But this must have been going on for a while. At least before I came back, because you guys were totally acting weird. I really wouldn't have guessedthat. Mikey, I thought you were, like, the straightest guy ever, which is one of the reasons I didn't want to come out. I figured I was going to disappoint you.”
“You thought you were going to disappoint me?” Mikey sounds horrified by his brother’s assumption.
“Well, yeah. I sure as fuck didn't care if Dad or Mom thought it wasn't okay. I just thought you wouldn't think I was cool.”
“Who you fuck doesn't have anything to do with whether or not you're cool.”
“You don't have to sound angry.”
“I'm sorry. I'm not angry. I'm a little bothered by the fact that I did something or said something that made you think you couldn't talk to me about this.”
“Growing up, you were always talking about girls. Like, always. Was that all bullshit?”
“I’m bi.”
“Bi? Are you sure?”
“He's definitely attracted to girls,” I say, throwing in my two cents. “I heard him having sex, like, the first night he got here, and it bothered the crap out of me.”
Jordan eyes Mikey suspiciously. “Where were you having sex?”
“In your bedroom,” Mikey replies, as if he wasn't eager to divulge that information.
Jordan chuckles. Then laughs. “Please tell me you changed the sheets.”
“Yes. Of course.” Mikey sounds annoyed more than anything else right now.
“Relax, big bro. That’s all that matters. So, guysandgirls, you greedy thing,” Jordan jokes.
Mikey tenses his jaw. This is obviously not the way he was expecting for today to go down.
“Well, Scott,” Jordan continues, “who knew that you would end up being a part of our big, gay family?”
I can’t stifle my laugh. And it’s the most relaxed I've felt since we got caught in the act. “I've been really happy to be a part of your big, gay family for sure.”
“Clearly.” He takes a sip of his drink and scans me up and down. “You know, Scott, I had a crush on you for a long time.”
“What?”
“Of course I did. Why do you think I kept hanging out with you all the time? And joined that study group for Bio 101?”
