Now that Diamond knew that I was for sure alive, I had to see what her next move was. Everyone else had assumed that I was dead, including the motherfucker that had set the fire.
Alistair Giancomo.
I wouldn’t have revealed myself to Diamond until much later, but I’d been tracking Alistair for a time now. It had taken me a little while to piece everything together but he had used his sister to do his dirty work. When Alistair had gone into the Deuce, I knew I had to reveal myself to her.
Coming out of the shower, I peeked through the blinds of the motel. After satisfying myself that there was no one in the parking lot, I sat down and turned the laptop I’d acquired from a pawn shop. While it booted up, I dressed in some clothes I’d scored from the Goodwill. I missed my Armani suits that I was sure my wife was burning the moment she stepped foot into our house.
I ran the program that had allowed me to get a glimpse into the world that I hadn’t returned to. There were a few security cameras all over the mansion and they secretly fed into a system only I had access to. My brother and his wife were in my kitchen with Trey’s sister, Mari, having a light night snack. They had piled ice cream high into newly bought dishes.
My own stomach growled as I got up and found a Ramen noddle cup. I filled it with water to the line and then popped it into the black microwave. By the time I sat down again, Diamond had popped into view, a black car dropping her off in the driveway. I watched the car speed away and her enter the house after punching in a security code.
She still hadn’t had the code changed.
A chill rippled through my stomach but I pushed it away. I would be fixing that shit in the very near future.
Listening in, I heard Treyanna say something but Diamond ignored her and kept on up the stairs. Enzo and her exchanged looks but they eventually went back to eating. My eyes followed Diamond on every screen until she reached our bedroom.
With slow movements, I hit click until the bedroom camera came up and I found myself watching only my wife on the full screen. This had been my routine for months. This was how I had kept myself sane until I could find out what Alistair was planning.
“And you’re still not exactly that fucking close,” I said out loud as though someone could hear..
The microwave dinged at the same time that Diamond’s phone went off. I could see it lighting up on the bed where she’d thrown it. Turning up the volume to hear as much of the conversation as I could, I stalked back over to get my meal before sitting down ready to dig in.
I heard her sigh before answering and putting the call on speakerphone.
“Good girl,” I mumbled.
“What?” I heard her ask the caller on the other end.
“I’m just checking in,” came the robust voice of the one man I hated more that Alistair.
“Nathan, you don’t need to check in,” Diamond spoke. “In fact, it’s better if you simply don’t ever call me again.”
“You answered, Di. I genuinely just wanted to check in.”
She was quiet as she stripped off the clothing she’d worn earlier. She picked up the remote and I immediately knew what she was turning to. The Golden Girls music blared through the room before she turned it down to a whisper.
“You need to stop calling me, Nathan.”
“You know he’s gone, Diamond. He’s never coming back. What you and I had…”
Nathan’s voice trailed off as he addressed someone on the other end. Diamond had picked up the phone by this point, starring at it hard. She held it in one hand while the other began to dance in the air as it hovered over the red button to end the call.
“Do it Tesoro, hang up on this pathetic motherfucker,” I whispered.
She didn’t.
“Sorry, I’m back,” I heard Nathan say. “Look I have some time off coming.”
“And?”
“And we should plan one of those getaways like we use to,” Nathan was a piece of shit.
Diamond stood and began to pace. Her face had scrunched up at his words. Why aren’t you telling him to go straight to hell?
“Like we use to?” Her voice sounded weird.
“I know you miss it, Diamond. The way I use to lick you from head to toe. The way you would ride me…”
