My pulse immediately forgot how to behave.
"What are you doing here?" she asked.
I lifted the coffee and paper bag.
"Breakfast delivery for my girlfriend."
Her gaze dropped to the bag.
"Everything bagel?"
"With plain cream cheese. I'm not a monster."
She peeked inside, and something in her expression softened. Just a little. But I saw it. "You brought me breakfast?"
"That's generally what breakfast delivery means."
"Damon."
"Mikayla."
She looked up at me, and for one dangerous second, I thought about kissing her. Not a performance. Not for an audience. Just because I wanted to.
Badly.
"Thank you," she said quietly. "That was really thoughtful."
"Just fulfilling my fake-boyfriend duties."
"Well, you're doing an excellent job."
"I aim to please."
Her mouth curved. And there went another piece of my heart. At this rate, I'd have nothing left by lunch.
She took a bite of her bagel and shook her head. "You know, my phone has been blowing up since last night."
"Fan mail?"
"Relatives. Apparently, everyone approves of you."
"Smart family."
"They've already decided you're wonderful."
"Also smart."
She rolled her eyes.
God, I loved making her do that. Then an alarm blared from her phone. Her entire expression changed.
"Oh, crap."
She silenced it and immediately started gathering her things.
"What's wrong?"
"Nothing. I have to go."
