Make or Break

She nodded. “Still want a rush?”

“Not any more. I want her to have time to recover. Besides, I have to let you know about the brotherhood patch. Later, Abby.”

I turned to leave. Cal stood at the end of the hallway with his legs in a wide stance and his arms crossed.

As I drew closer, I said, “You want to get a punch in now?”

Cal stared me straight in the eye. “I might have said that I’d beat you senseless if it were my daughter, but she isn’t. That clouded my mind and I fucked up. You had Alexandra’s back when shit got real. I should have voted.”

“Right.”

He took in a deep breath. “I’m sorry is what I’m saying, Tundra.”

I dipped my chin. “I appreciate that. It’s still raw, but I’ll move on.”

Cal dropped his arms. “Bluff’s gonna tell you the same thing.”

“If it’s because you told him to, he shouldn’t bother.”

Cal shook his head. “No, he pointed it out to me. He froze up. Didn’t expect that kind of vote to go down. I got no excuse, and I’m ashamed of that shit.”

Fucking hell.

It took balls to own up to doing the wrong thing and regretting it. And it reminded me of why I loved my brothers in the Riot MC.

I held out my hand, Cal took it, and I used my free hand to clap him on his upper bicep. “All right. You’re forgiven. I need to get back to Mickayla.”

Cal let my hand go. “Tell her I’m glad she’s all right. Though, that motherfucker got off too easy. Jail is too kind for him.”

I widened my eyes. “You got that right. If he gets arraigned…”

“You’ll need an alibi,” Cal muttered.

I chuckled. “You said it.”

As I steered into my complex, in my side mirror I saw another bike trailing me. My gut said it was Nickel, but it was hard to be certain since the rider wore a helmet.

I parked and the other rider pulled into a space next to mine.

“Nickel,” I said when he dismounted and took off his helmet.

“Tundra. Isn’t Mickayla here?”

I nodded. “Had some things to handle at the clubhouse. I thought you were working.”

“I’m on break.”

“It’s been over an hour since I saw her, but I’m not sure Mick’s gonna—”

“I’m here to talk to you.”

I stayed quiet.

He dragged a hand through his hair. “I’ve been thinking since I left the hospital. Who you choose to be your woman has no bearing on your patch. I should have voted for you to keep it. You’re a solid brother in the Riot.”

“Glad you see that.”

Nickel held my gaze. “I don’t understand why you kept things secret.”
