After I hung up, I shivered despite the blanket York wrapped around me.
“I need to figure out the best way to get you out of here,” York said in a hushed tone. “But we shouldn’t move until we have backup.”
“Why are you scared? Are those fuckers still alive? I should have shot them better.”
“You killed Aaron and hurt Vinny. The asshole called his family, and Zodiac thinks they’re on their way here. We shouldn’t assume we’re safe.”
“I can’t ride bitch,” I admitted. “My head is swimming. I wouldn’t be able to stay on behind you.”
“We’re waiting until your people get here.”
Even in the darkness, I could tell York wasn’t looking at me. My hands on his chin moved whenever he turned away.
“Are you mad that I said I love you?”
“No.”
“Do you love me?”
“Yes.”
“I’m not surprised,” I mumbled, trying to sound confident. “I’ve got it going on in all the right ways.”
Based on the feel of his face under my fingertips, York smiled.
“Why did this happen?” I asked as he settled behind me and rested my back against his chest. “What was the point?”
“The assholes had more rage than common sense. They planned to attack the Sorority House and kill everyone they could. Then, while your club was on its back foot, the assholes would run back to Baton Rouge and convince their daddies to save them. In their smooth brains, they thought their fathers chose to give the club to Zodiac rather than we fucking took it from them.”
“My people are safe, right? You weren’t lying about that.”
“Even if they aren’t safe, we can’t worry about them right now,” York said and lifted his rifle and tapped the scope. I looked through it, seeing only trees and shadows. “If Vinny’s dad and his buddies get here, they’ll realize there’s no one left to save. They might decide to come looking for someone to punish.”
Nodding, I fell silent while he kept watch with his rifle. Eventually, I took his phone and texted my brother.
“I am in love with York Lacroix.”
Boone replied, “Who?”
“From the Black Rainbow.”
“The guy who bought Nova’s house?”
“You know exactly who I’m talking about!!!!!!!!!”
“You gave me guff about Nova when I wanted to date her.”
“You weren’t in love yet.”
Boone refused to relent and texted, “I was in love from afar!”
“Well, I’m in love up close!”
Giving up, my brother asked, “Are you okay?”
“No. I’m in pain, and we’re hiding in the dark.”
“York is supposed to be a hotshot soldier.”
