Chapter Twelve
~Trevor~
I was more relieved than I’d like to admit to see Andy leaning against the fence, his gaze locked on me.
To be honest, I was afraid he wouldn’t really show. I hadn’t talked to him since I’d…well…since I’d last seen him and he probably thought I was ghosting him or something.
Or not. Because we hadn’t actually talked about what had happened, what it meant, if anything. I’d wanted to, but I honestly didn’t even know what to say, so I’d just said nothing.
“I’ll be right back!” I called to the team as I jogged over to Andy. “Hey, thanks for stopping by.” I raked my gaze over him and frowned. “Where’s your coat?”
“I didn’t bring one,” he answered with a shrug. “I hadn’t intended to be out this late. It’s been a weird day. What’s up?”
“So we’re supposed to start Hamlet this week and I was hoping I could stop by your place after practice tonight and talk about it,” I admitted.
“Really?” His brow furrowed as he sucked his lower lip between his teeth and dropped his gaze to the ground at his feet.
“Actually, I was hoping we could just like…watch the movie,” I teased, knowing he’d never go for that.
“You can’t just watch the movie,” he said immediately, finally looking back up at me. “What’s the assignment?”
“We have to discuss what we feel is the most complicated relationship in the play and why,” I said.
“Yo! Hix!” Coach yelled from across the field. “What the fuck are you doing?”
“I’ve got to go,” I said, turning back to Andy. “So, can I stop by?”
“Yeah,” he said. “I’m at the Armada Apartment building. Two-twenty-six.”
“Great!” I reached out without thinking, tucking a piece of his hair behind his ear. “I’ll see you in a couple hours.”
“Okay.” He turned around and shoved his hands in his pockets as he walked away again.
“Dude, what did Father Simpson want?” Mark asked, knocking his shoulder against mine as I rejoined the team on the field.
“Don’t call him that,” I snapped. “He’s not a priest yet.” I narrowed my gaze at him. “How do you know he’s going to be a priest?”
“His sister told me,” Mark answered. “We have Trig together. What’s going on?”
“Nothing,” I lied. “He’s tutoring me in Lit. Which by the way, was your idea. So shut up.”
Oh God…that was smooth and not at all suspicious. And judging from the weird look Mark gave me, he definitely noticed.
“You sure you’re okay?” he asked.
“Hey, ladies!” Coach Tine barked. “You want to gossip or you want to play football?”
“I’m fine,” I snapped, scooping my helmet from the ground and sliding it over my head. “Get in the game.”
Which was great advice, but I was too distracted with thoughts of Andy to take it and I ended up getting creamed for the rest of practice.
After, Coach decided to punish me with laps, so by the time I’d showered and changed, it was way later than I’d wanted it to be before I headed to Andy’s apartment.
I shot him a quick text to make sure it was still okay if I stopped by. I was already pulling into his parking lot when he texted back that it was fine.
After digging my book from my bag, I climbed out of the car and headed toward the door, which swung open before I could press the buzzer on the wall.
“Caitlyn,” I said, nodding to her as she stepped past me, holding the door open so I could enter.
