Caspian: The Not So Friendly Ghost

I took it and read the name.
Caspian Black.
My heart gave one hard thump.
I didn’t say anything, but Willow did.
“Sis, I swear to God, I did not put that name in there. I made every man write his own name. I stood right there with the bowl. I know damn well I didn’t write Caspian’s name, and unless one of these fools got a death wish and decided this was funny, I don’t know how the hell that got in there.”
I stared at the slip again.
A smile tugged at the corner of my mouth.
Willow’s eyes widened. “Why are you smiling?”
I folded the paper and handed it back to her. “I believe you.”
“You do?” Willow stared at me like that reaction had somehow disturbed her more than the name itself.
“Yes.”
“No accusations?”
“No.”
“You’re not about to ask if I’m playing some sick joke?”
“Nope.”
Her eyes narrowed. “Lakelyn.”
“What?”
“Why are you being so damn calm?”
I smiled and started back toward the party. “Maybe I’ve finally learned not to question everything that happens in this house.”
That wasn’t the whole truth; it was more so that I knew he was there. I just hadn’t told Willow yet. So no, I didn’t believe she had slipped Caspian’s name into that bowl… I knew exactly who had.
Behind me, Willow hurried to catch up. “Hold on. So are you accepting your husband or not?”
I laughed. “Girl, shut up.”
“That is not a no! Just remember, no divorces before midnight!”
Somewhere in that house, I knew Caspian was probably enjoying every second of this.
Willow looked toward the bar and suddenly straightened, her whole expression changing like she had just remembered somewhere else she was supposed to be. “Well, I gotta go, sis. I gotta go meet my Halloween husband.”
“Who did you pick?” I asked, genuinely curious.
I saw when she pulled her person, but I never actually found out who the lucky, or possibly unlucky, man was.
Willow pointed toward a tall man standing near the bar wearing a Frankenstein costume.
I followed her finger, took him in from head to toe, then slowly turned back toward her.
“Frankenstein, really? Willow, that man got bolts sticking out his fucking neck.”
