I knew that tone.
I narrowed my eyes. “Fine what?”
“I’ll pull for you.”
“Willow, don’t you dare—”
Her hand was already in the bowl.
“Willow!”
Too late.
She grabbed the final folded slip and jumped back before I could snatch it away.
The crowd cheered.
Willow laughed. “See? Done! Now let’s see who my sister is married to for the next…” She checked the clock. “Three hours and seventeen minutes.”
“Give me that!”
“Nope.”
She unfolded the slip, then froze.
The smile disappeared from her face so quickly that mine did too.
I frowned. “What’s wrong?”
Willow slowly lifted her head toward me, and for once in her life, my sister looked completely speechless.
That alone made me nervous.
“Willow.”
She looked back at the slip, then suddenly spun toward the crowd.
“Okay, everyone! Marriage office is closed! All Halloween unions are final! No divorces, no annulments, no appeals, no custody battles over the candy bowl, and don’t nobody come asking me for child support tomorrow morning!”
Everyone started complaining.
One of the women yelled, “Who did Lakelyn get?!”
Willow clutched the slip to her chest. “That information is sealed by the court!” She grabbed my wrist. “Come here.”
“Why are you acting weird?”
“I’m not acting weird.”
“You just shut down an imaginary marriage bureau.”
“Girl, come on.”
She dragged me away from the crowd and around the corner near the hallway, putting enough distance between us and everybody else that the music swallowed most of the noise.
The second we were alone, I pulled my arm free. “What the hell is wrong with you?”
Willow stared at me for another second before slowly holding out the slip.
