Caspian: The Not So Friendly Ghost

“Did Henrietta send you something?”

“That’s what I’m trying to figure out.”

Willow abandoned the stove altogether and hurried around the island.

“Let me see that.”

Granny handed her my phone, and Willow squinted, reading the transaction aloud word for word.

“‘C. Black Trust Distribution… ninety million dollars.’” Then she went completely, eerily quiet for approximately three seconds. “Hold up.”

“What?”

She surveyed the ceiling, then the kitchen doorway, before slowly focusing her wide eyes on me again. “Lakelyn.”

“What?”

“You remember how I told you I thought Caspian was still in this house?”

Granny looked between the two of us like she had awakened halfway through a conversation conducted in another language. “Still in the house? What do you mean, still in the house?”

“Willow, please don’t start,” I groaned.

“No, because this is getting suspicious as hell.” She pointed the spatula at me again. “And how are you telling me not to start when you’re the one who said he was in here too?”

Granny’s brows pulled together over the rim of her mug. “Caspian was here?”

Kaidence’s little head popped up from where he sat at the island. “Mommy, was Daddy here?”

“Willow,” I said in a warning tone.

No one was supposed to know about that dream, especially Kaidence. I knew I shouldn’t have told her shit. I should’ve kept my freaky little sex dream between me, my pillow, and the Lord, who probably hadn’t wanted to hear about it either.

“What?” Willow asked innocently. “I didn’t give details.”

“You’ve already said too much.”

Willow folded her arms smugly. “All I’m pointing out is that someone is looking after us, and until somebody gives me a better explanation, the only person I can think of is your man… well, ex-man. Actually, ex-ex since Yonas came after—”

“Willow.”

“What? I’m trying to keep the relationship timeline accurate.” She waved me off before I could say anything else. “But yeah, I’m not saying I know how, where he is, or what in the world is going on. I’m saying if somebody out there knows all our favorite foods and can drop ninety million dollars into your account with Caspian Black’s name attached to it...” She paused and lifted one shoulder. “Your missing man is currently my strongest suspect.”

Granny was still watching me, her mug lowered completely now. “What dream? Can somebody please explain to me why we’re talking like Caspian might be hiding in the pantry?”

Despite everything happening and the sheer absurdity of the morning, a laugh slipped out of me.

I went over and patted her shoulder. “Nothing, Granny. I’ll call the bank on Monday and find out exactly where the money came from. There has to be some kind of explanation for that part, even if I have to sit on the phone all day until somebody gives me one. As for the food?” I glanced back toward the island, then the fully stocked refrigerator. “I can’t explain that yet, but I’m not about to start accusing a missing man of sneaking into kitchens in the middle of the night either.”

Willow made a little sound under her breath.

I pointed at her without turning around. “Don’t.”

“I didn’t say anything.”

“You were about to.”

“I was about to say maybe we should just be grateful.”
