Caspian: The Not So Friendly Ghost

“That’s what I told myself. So I moved it back.” Her expression grew more serious. “Then I turned away again, and when I looked back, it was behind those little decorative tissues on the other side of the vanity.”
A chill crept over my skin.
Willow held up one finger. “Still, I tried to be reasonable. I put it back where I knew I had left it, stood there for a second, and told myself I was tired from moving and probably confusing myself.”
“And?”
“And while I was standing there, that lip gloss rolled right back across the counter and stopped between my elbows.”
I stared at her.
“Exactly.” She nodded slowly. “That was when I said, ‘Jesus is a fence,’ grabbed my makeup case, and came downstairs talking about I was finishing my unpacking down here. That bathroom was violating the terms of our spiritual lease agreement.”
Now I remembered it clearly.
Willow had come down those stairs moving entirely too fast for somebody who had been upstairs bragging about her soaking tub less than an hour earlier. When I asked what was wrong, she had brushed me off and started unpacking like relocating her entire beauty routine to the first floor was perfectly normal.
“You never told me that part.”
“Because what was I supposed to say? ‘Hey, sis, something upstairs just played ping-pong with my Fenty’?” She shook her head. “I didn’t know what happened… I still don’t. I just knew I wasn’t staying up there by myself long enough to find out if it wanted to start moving my skincare next.”
Granny shook her head quietly over her tea, clearly fighting back an amused smile.
I pointed a finger at Willow. “So you’ve known something weird has been happening in this house this whole time?”
“I knew something was going on. I didn’t know we had a full-service supernatural provider situation going on in the kitchen.”
“Willow.”
“I’m just saying. Lip gloss is one thing. A refrigerator stocked like Costco and Sam’s Club had a baby is something else entirely.”
I opened my mouth to answer before remembering the other massive reason I had nearly lost my mind when I woke up this morning. “Wait.”
Willow lifted an eyebrow. “What now?”
“Something else happened.”
“Please don’t tell me somebody bought us a car too. I ain’t dressed to go outside.”
I held up my phone, turning the screen around. “Ninety million dollars appeared in my bank account this morning.”
The entire kitchen went dead still. The spatula slipped slightly in Willow’s hand before she caught it, her knuckles white.
“Come again? How much?”
“Ninety million.”
Her mouth fell open in absolute disbelief. “American?”
I frowned. “What other dollars would I be talking about?”
“Girl, I don’t know! You just said ninety million dollars appeared out of nowhere! I needed to make sure we weren’t talking Monopoly, pesos, Jamaican, Canadian, nothing!”
Kaidence’s eyes were wide with curiosity. “Mommy, does that mean we’re rich?”
Before I could respond, Granny asked, “Lakelyn, what do you mean money appeared?”
I walked over to the table and handed her the phone. She read the transaction on the screen, her grey brows slowly drawing together in deep concentration.
