“Thank you,” she croaked.

I stood and lifted my chin at Zeus. “Catch you later, bro.”

“Keep the shiny side up,” he said around a mouthful of cinnamon roll.

I grunted and headed for the door.

The ride to Angel’s didn’t take me long.

She was living in a little two-bedroom ranch about fifteen minutes from the bakery.

As I turned into her driveway, I shook my head.

The grass was up to my shins.

What the fuck?

The only reason she signed a lease on the place was because lawn care was included in the rent. That was a couple of months ago, but from the looks of it, nobody had touched the yard.

“Fucker.”

Pulling out my phone, I scrolled down to the landlord’s number.

“Yeah!” he answered.

“What the fuck, Harry? I just pulled up to my sister’s house, and the yard is like a fucking jungle.”

“My guys were just there.”

I looked at the overgrown lawn again. No fucking way. It’d been months since someone mowed the yard. “Drive by here and tell me they were just here.”

“Fuck.” He sighed. “I’ll head that way now.”

“When you do, don’t bother my sister. She’s sick.”

“Yeah, I hear ya. I’ll get it taken care of today.”

“See that you do,” I rumbled before ending the call.

It was bullshit I had to call him. He should be keeping an eye on things himself.

Annoyed that my sister was getting taken for a ride, I swung my leg over my sled and headed for the front door.

“Uncle Jax!” Samuel screeched as I came through the door.

Lunging forward, I barely caught him when he launched himself off the couch. I grunted.

“Boy. You’re gonna hurt yourself.”

For a three-year-old, the kid was solid.

“Why are you here?” JJ asked from the floor, not looking up from his iPad.

My brows snapped together. “Why aren’t you in school?”

He’d started kindergarten this year, and I was pretty sure I’d passed two school buses on the way over here.

JJ shrugged. “Momma was too sick to take me.”
