I close my eyes, assuming Lennon will pass out quickly, but her low voice breaks the silence. “So, what do you think so far?” Our site is spacious, but the night is quiet enough for voices to carry, so she keeps hers low.
I clear my throat but keep my voice low. “Your family is the best, Lennon. But you and I already know that.”
She sighs. “Yeah, they are. In fact, all I could think about tonight was how there’ll be a little baby here this time next year.” From the corner of my eye, I see her hand move over her stomach.
“Yeah, there is.”
“My mom wouldn’t stop talking about it earlier either. I guess she and your mom have a lunch date this week to talk about the baby shower.”
“You already knew that was coming…”
“I know,” she starts, then pauses. “It just makes this all feel more real.” I keep my gaze on the ceiling of the tent. “I—I started feeling the baby move,” she continues. I turn to her and find her already watching me.
Our eyes lock, but I can’t help the grin that overtakes my mouth. “You have?”
“Yeah. It feels like bubbles floating around in my stomach.” There’s a hint of amusement to her words. “I had to look it up because it freaked me out.”
“You could have asked me. I would have told you that’s what it was.” Her smile falls. “I’ve been reading, remember?”
Her head turns back to face the top of the tent. “Right.”
One word, and the uneasiness between us returns.
Okay then. I guess the conversation is over.
“This mattress feels so good.” Lennon moans as she settles on her side, facing away from me and pulling the blankets over her shoulders.
Okay, I guess we aren’t done talking yet.
“I’m glad. I tried to find the best one I could.” Lennon shivers beside me, drawing the blankets closer to her. “Are you cold?”
“Yeah, a little. I wish I’d packed a sweater to sleep in, but we don’t normally camp this late. It’s colder than usual, but I’ll manage.”
I don’t have an extra sweater to give her, so I offer the next best thing. “Do you want me to hold you?”
She turns her face to me. “You would do that?”
“I’d do anything you want me to, Lennon. I thought I made that clear.”
Her gaze searches mine for so long, I wonder if she’s forgotten how to speak. Then she gives me one word, surprising me with the hope it contains. “Okay.”
“Turn over.”
Lennon shifts onto her side, and I move in behind her, wrapping an arm around her but careful where I rest my hand. I settle it on her upper thigh. The second my cock touches her ass, I realize how horrible this plan was.
Lennon lets out a small gasp. “Uh, Easton?”
“Sorry, sweetheart. Can’t really help it.”
Her laugh is quiet. “I guess any man with a woman’s ass pressed against their crotch would react, huh?”
I swallow hard, my voice low but steady. “I’m not any man, and you’re definitely not any woman, Lennon.”
My heart rate climbs as she grows silent, my words resting between us. I know she understood the insinuation, but that doesn’t mean either of us is going to do anything about it.
Then she does something I wasn’t expecting. She grabs the hand draped over her and brings it to her stomach, letting our joined hands rest there. I try not to read too much into it, but feeling Lennon’s growing bump beneath my palm quickens my breathing and builds my need to hold her closer at record speed.
Fuck. Lennon’s growing a human, and I’ve never found her sexier.
