Falling for the Grumpiest Protector

"Enjoy your coffee empire."
I turn and walk away.
"I love you," she calls after me.
I lift one hand without turning around. "Questionable!"
I hear her laughing behind me. Unbelievable. I take a sip of my latte. Perfect. At least someone in this town still knows how to behave.
I'm halfway back to Noah when a familiar woman approaches Betty's booth. Emma Whitaker. I remember her from the funeral, and Noah has mentioned her enough times since I came home that I know she's the veterinarian who takes care of half the animals in Oakridge and apparently half the humans by association. She smiles as we pass.
"Morning, Madison."
"Morning."
I keep walking. Under my breath, I mutter something about arrogant farmers and free tomatoes. Emma slows. I don't. Behind me, I hear her reach Betty's booth.
"What was that about?"
There's a pause. I can practically feel Betty looking in my direction.
"The beginning of a long story."
"Should I ask?"
"Later. Coffee?"
"Yes, please."
I shake my head and keep walking. Small towns. I'd forgotten how quickly one conversation can become community property.
At home, Mom is in the kitchen when Noah and I walk in. She looks at the canvas bag.
"You found tomatoes."
"I did."
I set it on the counter. "And apparently half the vegetable stand."
Mom peers inside. "Martinez?"
I stop.
"You too?"
"What?"
"You know him."
"Of course I know him."
I close my eyes.
"Does everyone in Oakridge know Javier Martinez?"
"Probably."
"Fantastic."
