I thought about it while staring at photographs of my family.
And I thought about it while staring at my own reflection in the ceiling. Eventually, I decide I’ve spent enough time plotting the destruction of two of the only people I would give a kidney to.
I reluctantly leave my room because I honestly have zero desire to spend the next two days trapped inside a bedroom with nothing to do.
I’m always doing something back home.
If I’m not working then I’m either training, traveling, reading or overthinking. Occasionally, I spend my days plotting the downfall of whoever wronged me that week.
But being forced to sit still for forty-eight hours? Yeah… that is practically psychological warfare.
And besides, Winter Storm is enormous. There has to be something worth exploring.
There’s just one thing…I’m not going anywhere near Stephen Choi. The man has made it very clear which side of the estate I should stay away from.
Fine.
I can respect boundaries.
Especially his.
Mostly because I have no interest in seeing his irritating face.
So, I grab a jacket and quietly wander around the part of the estate I’m allowed to explore, taking my time. There’s no denying that this place is even more beautiful during the day.
I pass a sitting room, a gallery, and a long hallway with huge glass windows.
I stop in front of them.
At first, I think it’s frost on the glass. But when I step closer, I realize it’s part of the glass itself.
Snowflakes.
Hundreds of them, delicate and perfectly shaped. They’re almost invisible when the glass is warm, but the cold makes them stand out.
I trace one in the air with my finger, careful not to touch the glass. The real snow outside mixes with the snowflakes in the glass. For a moment, I can’t tell which ones are real and which ones aren’t.
It’s magical.
I immediately hate that thought.
Magical is the kind of word people use to romanticize things that aren’t practical.
And I prefer practical.
Magical has no place in my vocabulary.
Still, I don’t move.
I keep looking.
Then the clouds shift.
A ray of sunlight breaks through the gray sky and spills across a hidden garden.
The entire landscape changes.
The snow-covered trees glow. The frozen hedges shimmer. And the fountain in the center catches the warm light.
