I blow out a breath. “I was worried about Lawson.” I give Brewser a look. “I was sure you would sleep through that.”
“Too bad for you when we get old, we get up to pee a lot.”
I groan.
Beckett is watching me with a strange look.
“What?” I ask.
“That’s actually pretty great for you. Very out of character.” He points his fork at Lawson. “She must really like you. Sneaking out at night, and it was all her own idea? Definitely a big step for Sutton.”
Lawson leans over and kisses my cheek, and I revel in the fact that he’s able to do that in front of all of these people we love.
“Yeah,” he says. “I think she kinda likes me.”
“He even likes my cinnamon rolls more than you do,” I tell Beckett.
Lawson shakes his head. “I was actually sitting there thinking how amazing your cinnamon rolls were and how much of a coincidence it was that I had just gotten cinnamon rolls from my stalker.”
“Yeah, I bet you were thinking about her ‘cinnamon rolls’,” Muriel says.
Patty nudges her. “No sex talk in front of Beckett and her mom.”
My mom and Greg just laugh.
I look at my younger siblings. They are happily eating peas and are clearly clueless about what the grown-ups are talking about.
But that won’t last forever.
“Are you sure you want to move closer and hang out here?” I ask my mom.
She gets a little watery-eyed. “Very,” she says.
Oh. Now I feel a little sting at the back of my eyes. “You all are going to have to learn to behave with the kids around,” I tell Muriel.
“Oh, that was barely sex talk,” Muriel says. “At best it was dirty thoughts talk, and I didn’t even say any body parts.”
“You don’t think Beckett is smart enough to figure out what you meant by ‘cinnamon rolls’?” Lydia asks. She looks at my brother and says slowly, “She means her boobs.”
Beckett throws a pea at her.
Patty snaps her fingers and shakes her head at them both.
“I didn’t mean Beckett,” I say.
Lydia just laughs as Beckett flips her off behind his napkin so Katie and Oliver can’t see.
Basically… it’s all fine.
In fact, it’s great.
Everyone is together and…happy. Very happy. And I’m not having to really do a thing to make it happen.
Reading my mind, as always, Lawson reaches under the table to squeeze my hand. I give him a smile, and I know he knows that I’m good.
“Wait, cinnamon rolls mean boobs?” Wilson asks, as if it’s just sunk in. “Cinnamon rolls are like bread which are like buns, so I would think butt. But I suppose it could be something else.”
“Wilson!” I protest.
