But he turns back to his sister. “I’ll see you later.”
“Um…” Sutton looks up at me. “Well, I was going—”
“I mean tomorrow. Whenever. I assumed you’d be helping Lawson look after Brewser.”
She nods.
“Okay. So…I’ll see you later,” he says again.
“Right.”
Beckett starts toward his truck again, and Sutton takes a step in his direction. “Hey, Beck?”
He turns back. “Yeah?”
“You should come over to Brewser’s tomorrow after work. I’ll make dinner for everyone.”
He smiles. “A casserole?”
She gives a choked laugh. “Yeah. Probably.”
“I’ll be there.”
She watches him and Andi get in his truck.
I move in and wrap my arms around her from behind. “You okay?”
She snuggles into me. “Yeah.” She looks up at me over her shoulder. “I’m really good. And I think everyone is, actually.”
I breathe out. “I think so too.” I kiss the side of her neck, then take her hand and dig my keys out of my pocket. “So you’re coming home with me?”
“If that’s okay with you.”
“Oh, now you’re going to start asking permission to be in my house?”
The sound of her laughter accompanies us all the way across the parking lot.
CHAPTER 23
LAWSON
“Ladies and gentlemen! We have a very special surprise for you right now.”
Beckett is holding a mic at center ice and grinning at our fans.
It’s between the second and third periods, and we’re supposed to be taking a break. There’s supposed to be a goofy little contest of some kind between the two mascots right now, but they’re in on this too, so they’re waiting just off the ice with the rest of us.
I find Sutton across the ice from the bench. She’s in her usual seat in the front row with Astrid and the other girls.
Sutton looks predictably confused.
Perfect.
We put this together for her and have carefully kept it a secret. Nora usually fills the announcer role for us, but Beckett wanted to do this. I love that for both of them.
“As most of you know, there’s a lot of dancing that happens when you come to a hockey game in Rebel,” Beckett says. “I guess even if you’re new tonight, you’ve probably caught on to that.”
The crowd cheers and we all grin.
