He hangs up the phone and then turns his body to me. “Good news. Feet is down on the Cape, and he’s going to drive us back to Boston. He’ll be here in twenty.”

Oh.

Okay.

I guess we won’t be staying in that one bed after all.

“Yeah, sure,” I say with a lot more confidence than I feel. Not sure if it hit the mark, though.

I turn out of the room, walk down the hall, and exit the inn to wait for someone named Feet.

Chapter Twenty-Six

Calvin

“Thanks for coming, man.” I shake my teammate’s hand right outside his red sports car.

I open the passenger door for Lettie, but she shakes her head and opens the back door instead.

Her body is rigid, and her jaw is clenched as she slips into the car and slams the door behind her.

I can’t help but think I misstepped, although I’m not sure where.

My mind wanders back to half an hour earlier, when Lettie’s face landed on the one bed. Her face was sheet white, and her eyes were wide and dilated.

She was terrified to stay the night with me, and I’m obviously not going to force her to do anything she doesn’t want to do.

Which is why we are currently in the car with Feet, who weirdly drives his sports car a little slower than I anticipated.

I turn behind me to the back seat and whisper to Lettie, “Feet doesn’t have a lead foot.”

She stays perfectly still. No comment. No smile. Nothing.

“Hey! I heard that!” the man beside me complains as he slams his foot on the gas, and our heads jolt back.

“Thanks a lot,” Lettie mumbles from the back seat—the first thing she’s said to me since we left the hotel room.

And apparently, the final thing she’d say for the entire two-hour ride back from the Cape. She fell asleep, or pretended to, for the last hour. Feet and I are just shooting the shit, catching up, even though I saw him in the locker room a few days ago.

“You can just pull up to the curb here,” I say, pointing to a bus lane that’s almost in front of my building in Boston’s Seaport District.

Feet does what I say, and I turn back to find Lettie still fast asleep.

I pound Feet’s fist. “Thanks for the ride, man.”

“Anytime. You got your girl?”

“Yeah,” I say as I step out of his car. I don’t feel like correcting him, especially since I want her to be my girl.

I pull the back door open and whisper in Lettie’s ear, “Time to wake up, Lettie baby.”

Bright hazel eyes flash open as she sits up in a rush, bumping her head on the top of the car ceiling before straightening her back.

“Huh?” Her voice is dazed and raspy.

“Let’s go,” I say softly as I guide her out of the car and into the lobby of my building. She trips over her own feet, and I hold on to her tighter.
