After the hostess seated us and handed us our menus, I picked mine up and started looking through it. This place was nice as hell, and I honestly hadn't expected Cassian to bring me somewhere like this. Hell, when I got off work, all I had planned on doing was taking me a nice hot shower, finding something to eat, and relaxing for the rest of the night.
Work had already worn my ass out. I had more patients than I expected, and between doing cleanings and helping with consultations, I barely had time to sit down. Three of them had come in wanting to know about getting some teeth replaced, and believe me, they needed that shit. I wasn't one to judge nobody's mouth, especially with the type of work I did, but some of the things I'd seen today had me wondering how long they'd been walking around like that.
As I continued looking over the menu, our waitress came to the table and introduced herself. She gave us a few minutes to decide what we wanted before walking away, which was a good thing because I still hadn't made up my mind. They had some good-looking food on here, but these damn prices were something else.
“Damn, why is this shit so high?” I asked, looking over the entrées.
Cassian glanced up from his menu and laughed. “It's not high, ma.”
“Yes, the hell it is. The steak and lobster is eighty-nine damn dollars.”
“Okay, ma. You acting like that shit is a hundred dollars.”
I looked at him like he was crazy. “Nigga, it's eleven dollars away from being a hundred.”
He laughed again, shaking his head like I was the one tripping. I looked back at the price. Eighty-nine dollars. His ass could laugh all he wanted.
“I guess,” I mumbled, looking back at the menu. “But you could've taken me somewhere else. Hell, I could've cooked this shit at home.”
And I meant that. All he had to do was buy the ingredients, and I could've made us something just as good without spending all that money.
“Ma, that's the whole point. I'm trying to give you a break. Yo' ass always in that kitchen cooking, and I wanted to do something nice for you.”
I looked across the table at him, and he was sitting there smiling like he hadn't just brought me somewhere expensive as hell.
“I appreciate it, Cassian. I really do. I just don't know what to get.”
“Let me order for you, then.”
I looked over the menu one more time before setting it down. “Okay, but don't order me nothing nasty.”
“Girl, ain't nobody about to order you no nasty-ass food.”
I laughed. “I'm just saying.”
When the waitress came back, Cassian placed our orders and asked for a bottle of wine. I wasn't expecting that last part, so I looked at him once she walked away.
“You drink wine?”
“Yeah. Is that a problem?” He leaned back in his chair, licking his lips.
“No, I just didn't take you for the type of man who drinks wine.”
“Damn, that's crazy.” He laughed. “What you thought I drank?”
“Some hard-ass liquor.”
“I drink Hennessy from time to time.”
“I knew it!”
“No, you didn't.” He laughed, pointing at me.
“Yes, I did. You look like the type.”
“And what the hell does that mean?”
“Exactly what I said.”
