“I'd really like to race again,” I remarked provocatively.

Theoretically, my car could keep up with hers. And I had gotten better too. However, it had already been eight months since the last race I had managed to convince her to do through town. Since then, she had been on a lot of business trips.

“Definitely not while Nicolaj is in town, kid,” she laughed without looking at me.

I had gotten used to her calling me that, unlike Adrian, who blushed every time she treated him like the little boy he had been fifteen years ago.

“Did you prepare?”

I raised both eyebrows at her.

“For what exactly?”

“The file Mrs. Hudgington and I assigned you last time?”

“I...” I began, embarrassed, and a grin stole across my lips as she looked at me with alarm. “...can do that without preparation.”

“You're reckless, Miles,” Camille sighed.

And she was, as always, far too kind to me.

“I'm just very lucky.”

She laughed before turning the next corner onto the next main road. “You mean you're playing with your luck until one day you run out of it.”

“Come on,” I replied. “I could be the worst in this program and you'd still let me work at the firm.”

Even if she would never admit it, she wouldn't let me down. And yes, I knew that would mean taking advantage of her good nature, which was why I had no intention of doing so.

What was the point of being immortal if I couldn't eventually get my act together, get a degree, and work my way up somewhere, just like she had done?

I didn't even know if I wanted to be a lawyer, but I was the best in the debate seminar, even if my opponents were often more frustrated than Emely Copeland after I cornered her in a battle of words.

The thought of her angry face made me smile, and as always, I felt that pleasant feeling of anticipation in my stomach.

She had turned my head. Of all the girls in this town, the last one I was allowed to even look at.

“Damn it, Miles!” Camille hissed and slapped my thigh. “That's not how life works.” She gave me a warning look, as if she was already worried about me again. “And to be honest, I'm just waiting for life to teach you a huge lesson.”

Okay, maybe she wasn't that worried after all.

“Got it, Mom,” I replied teasingly, which she acknowledged, as always, with a raised eyebrow. “Good thing I'm not the worst law student.”

“Emely Copeland is better than you.”

Oh shit.

“And I wouldn't hesitate to hire her if you both ever applied for a job at the firm at the same time.”

For a moment, my smile slipped.

That hit home.

I wasn't the jealous type. Not when it came to something as trivial as academic performance. Emely was good, and I admired her for that, even though I would never tell her. She would probably laugh at me. The only reason I strove for good grades was to provoke my little wolf.

But I had to process the fact that Camille was now comparing me to her.

“Then I guess I'm lucky that Emely will never apply to work for you,” I laughed dryly.
