A Society of Traitors

I looked at Emely, who was trying to concentrate on running again, and finally at Olivia, pulled Olivia closer to me and smiled at her before looking into the coach's watery, light blue eyes.

“Maybe we'll just show you what we danced two years ago at Christmas.”

Olivia's eyes widened in shock.

The coach's eyes began to sparkle. “That would be great!”

“I don't know...” Olivia confessed, and the look she gave me let me know that I was pushing the envelope. But who knew when I would get another chance like this.

“What song do you need for that?”

“Hold on…”

I took my phone out of my black gym bag and connected it to the Bluetooth speaker the woman had brought with her.

With one last glance at Emely, I went over to Olivia and pulled her behind me to the center of the hall in front of the panoramic windows.

Showtime.

“Miles, please tell me this is a joke,” Olivia blurted out, completely overwhelmed.

“Why? Can't you do it anymore?” I laughed to cover up my nervousness.

“Sure I can... but can you?”

For a moment, I was just me and Olivia. I held her gaze, just like two years ago, and an old, raspy feeling settled in my throat.

“Would you believe me if I told you that I haven't forgotten a single one of our choreographies?”

Olivia's mouth slightly opened and the realization hit her eyes.

But the coach had already started the song that I had heard at least a thousand times in the months since our last dance.

To distract myself again, I looked down into the large hall, satisfied with catching her staring. Even though she quickly looked away, I knew it would only be a matter of seconds before her attention was back on me.

The coach seemed to be explaining something, and the girls were all sitting in the bleachers. It couldn't have been better.

I refocused my attention on Olivia, who was still staring at me as if I had just dropped a bomb, then I began to lead her across the dance floor.

The music carried us along like it had back then. The dance where I took complete control and Olivia had to rely on me entirely.

It was like balancing on a thin silk thread, because on the one hand I was tempted to look at Emely, but on the other hand, old scars and memories of New York rose up in me like wisps of fog.

And so I concentrated on Olivia, let go of her body with one hand, and turned her away from me for the first time, only to pull her back to me immediately. She leaned back, elegant as always, and I held her tight as we both spun.

Finally, I pulled her back to me and we repeated the choreography.

For a moment, my attention wandered down to where the cheerleaders were now staring up, but my attention slipped to Emely.

Her gaze spoke volumes.

I spun Olivia around, turned her, and let her fall into my arms so that she hovered just above the ground. Then I pulled her up, and as I spun her this time, I felt dizzy myself, because the longer I looked at her, the more I saw someone else.

The climax of the song was near, but I felt a tightness in my chest. Without a doubt, the next steps would have an unpredictable effect on me.
