I realized I was worrying too much again, but it was necessary because, since no one else was concerned, at least one person had to consider the potential threats to the pack.
“Kieran, are you still on the IT security team?” Cody asked, starting to fiddle with the button on the lamp and causing one of the girls two seats away to give him a reproachful look, which he didn’t even notice.
How quickly had he eaten that damn chocolate bar?
“Soon...” Kieran murmured, and I looked at him searchingly.
Maybe he would be able to find out something about this hacker.
“Something more important,” Kieran said suddenly, reaching into the pocket of his black band hoodie. “I brought you something.”
He looked at me, his expression serious, even though a smile was beginning to form.
“You seem to be taking this law thing seriously.”
He pulled his hand out and revealed a small golden bracelet with a golden scale charm.
“A... bracelet? For me?” I asked, confused.
I raised an eyebrow, looking questioningly at Kieran before he held it out to me invitingly.
So, I put my wrist out and watched as he placed the delicate chain around my wrist, before fastening the clasp.
It was heavy.
“Gold-plated silver with a high silver percentage in the gold alloy.”
Real silver. Real...
I began to laugh in amused disbelief and shook my head.
“And for a moment there, I thought it was a sentimental gift of friendship.”
It was indeed a beautiful gift. Kieran was the first person, apart from my big brother, who made me feel that studying law was the right decision. My decision.
But Kieran hadn't given me this bracelet just because of my studies.
“I want you to have something to defend yourself against those fuckers if they don't know their limits.”
My gaze automatically swept across the library to Miles.
The red-haired beauty was still talking to him, but he wasn't looking at her anymore. He was looking at us. And he seemed focused on something. On someone.
I looked back at Kieran, who hadn't yet noticed that the Ruisangors were present.
Cody laughed.
“Kieran. We're in Blairville. Here, we have the treaties that everyone follows in public. She won't need anything like that unless she plans to visit the DeLoughreys.”
Definitely not.
“Better safe than sorry,” Kieran muttered grimly, working his jaw.
“If I were you, I wouldn’t be afraid of the powers of the other species.” Cody became serious, lowered his voice, and leaned across the table toward us. “The serious shit happens behind closed doors.”
