The Bear’s Darling

“Nazuss!” he spat. “You aren’t allowed to touch a teacher!”

“And you aren’t allowed to bully your students!” I snapped. “Had I already mated with Arthur then it would’ve been my bear you had to deal with instead. Be glad it isn’t.”

Niels scoffed. “You shifters always think you’re the toughest around—” he stopped himself. Eyes widened for a second before he schooled his features.

“You aren’t a shifter?!” a female student gasped, making the rest of the class stand up and demand answers.

Niels glared at me, then whispered harshly. “Look what you did!” Then in a much higher tone, “Nazuss, to the headmaster’s office! I don’t want to see you in my class ever again. Good luck graduating now.”

I risked one look at Arthur, but he was no longer there.

Storming out, I left the class knowing my family had my back. Now I just had to hope the headmaster would listen to me. Not that I cared about graduating, but this shit with Niels had gone on for long enough. No teacher should be allowed to treat students like Niels had.

My light guided me to headmaster Wren’s door, the golden plaque a sign I truly was in the right place. I took in a steadying breath, calming my anger, and knocked.

Chapter Eight

Headmaster Wren smiled kindly as I entered his office. It felt daunting, and I suddenly felt bad over laughing at Jamie and Casey when they’d been sent here. At least they’d gone together. I had no one to lean on, but considering Arthur would be in trouble if he was here, I was happy to go it alone.

“I was alerted you’d be here, Nazuss,” the headmaster said, which wasn’t creepy at all. He chuckled, “Don’t make that face, The Magic lets me know these things, that’s all.”

“Did it also tell you that Niels should learn to control his temper? That he frightened my mate so much I had to step in and physically tug him away?”

He simply stared at me, hands clasped on the table. “It does not. No.”

Sighing, I sat down in front of him. “Well, he did. Then he yelled at me and told me to go see you. I’m no longer allowed in his class and won’t pass.”

“I see.”

“Oh, and he admitted to not being a shifter to the whole class, which is sorta shitty if you ask me. He’s been judging all of us and our bonds with our shifted forms, but he isn’t even a shifter? That’s just not okay.”

“I am aware that he isn’t a shifter,” Wren said, looking calm which only infuriated me more. “However, I was not aware that you felt he judged you and the other students.”

“He isn’t a favorite of many students, but I think that’s normal for most teachers. He just takes it a step too far.”

He nodded again. “Like he did with Damon?”

My gaze shot to his. “Damon told you?”

He shook his head. “Other students have made their displeasure clear to me.”

“And he’s still allowed to teach?” I scoffed, then remembered myself. It was hard having grown up as a prince. The only people I had to show respect to had earned it. Wren had yet to do anything to show me he was either good or bad, so my judgement and respect was flimsy at best.

“If I fire him, you won’t have any teacher for that class for the rest of the school year. So yes, I kept him on as a teacher because I felt it was better to have him than no one.”

I got the feeling he wasn’t supposed to tell me this, and wisely didn’t comment on it.

“What is he exactly?” I whispered, like it would be a huge secret.

“A wizard with the ability to shapeshift. He doesn’t have a bond with his forms as he is the one changing magickly.”

“And he’s been going on about us thinking we are one with our forms!? Of course he would think that! He is!”

Wren blinked. “He did what?”

I sighed, then explained, “He’s been going on and on about us having to think as one being and not separate from our forms. That’s why he was so hard on Damon. He wanted him to see his two forms as one, and Damon couldn’t do that.”

Wren just blinked for several seconds, mouth gaping. “That… I wasn’t aware of that.”
