“Misty!” Eden squeals as she wakes up, wiggling around the seatbelt to give the older woman a hug. The woman hugs her back before continuing.

“I should have known you all had gone out drinking when I got a lovely text from my baby sister saying, ‘you da best Misty-Moo… my tummy hurts.’”

“Sorry,” Gemma smiles sheepishly. “My tummy does hurt, you know.”

“Let’s get you inside.” Misty goes round the other side of the car to unbuckle Gemma and help her navigate her way to the ground. Then to the garden bed, where she unceremoniously throws up. “Y’know, if Sam was here, I wouldn’t be the one dealing with this. God, I miss your girlfriend some days.” Misty rubs Gemma’s back, then looks over to us. And over at Eden, who is giggling uncontrollably.

“Oliver! Are you okay with taking care of Eden tonight? I think I’m going to have my hands full with this one.” She must notice the whiteness of my face because she continues, eyes softening. “Don’t worry. I know about you and Eden.”

That sentence warms me from the inside out. I must mean enough to her if Gemma’s sister knows.

Eden looks bleary-eyed between Misty and I, before nodding. “I’ll go with Oliver,” she mumbles, wrapping her arm around mine. Ben turns in his seat and gives me the biggest shit-eating grin he can muster. I’m trying my hardest not to freak out.

“Guess we better get going then,” he smirks.

“Guess we’d better,” I respond through gritted teeth. The car leaves again, and Gemma and Misty wave us off. And then it’s just Eden and me.

And Ben.

But he doesn’t really count.

And I guess I should also include Michelle, who will be getting a play-by-play of this whole night over text message. Right on cue my phone buzzes.

Benjamin Rabbit:

When I click on it, I’m not surprised to see Eden and I cuddling up in the backseat. She’s asleep again, which I’m grateful for. She doesn’t need to see Ben being a stalker.
