Daddy’s Fortitude

This was her problem to take care of.

Well, it was really Charlie’s. It seemed like even from beyond the grave, he was causing her issues. She was certain he’d be happy about that.

“You don’t look like you’ve slept,” Ammo said with a frown. “What is it? What’s wrong?”

“What’s wrong?” she repeated. “What’s wrong is you just had to spend the night in jail because Kelly-Anne is upset with me for insisting that she get a DNA test.”

“You wanted to get a DNA test so you can know that the baby is Charlie’s?” Gwen said. “That’s good thinking. Is there something in Charlie’s will about his children getting a share of assets?”

Wow, Gwen was good.

She nodded. “Yes, Matthew explained it yesterday. If the baby is Charlie’s then the baby gets his share of the house and any other assets. Of which there are none.”

“Let’s get out of here,” Ammo stated. He pushed on the small of her back. “We’ll go somewhere quieter to talk about this.”

She was suddenly aware of all the eyes on them. He was right. They should go somewhere else to talk about this.

They headed outside, his hand still on the small of her back, guiding her. It felt heavy and warm, and she couldn’t deny how much she liked it.

Be strong.

You need to tell him to leave.

It was the only thing that would keep him safe from that asshole last night. Sure, maybe Ammo could protect himself from that guy, but who knew how many men the boss had working for him? Who even knew who the boss was? Because she didn’t.

But he didn’t sound like he was a nice guy. It sounded like Charlie had been mixed up in some pretty terrible stuff.

And she was terrified to find out the extent of what they’d do to get their thirty thousand back. Well, she guessed she was going to find out soon, since she couldn’t actually afford to pay them back.

A shiver ran through her as they headed toward Gwen and Dominic’s rental vehicle.

“Are you cold?” Ammo asked, staring down at her in concern. “You didn’t sleep, did you?”

She shook her head. “I was worried about you. Did you sleep?”

Ammo shook his head. “No, but it’s not the first time I’ve gone without sleep. Probably won’t be the last. You need your sleep, though, or you’ll get sick.”

She was aware of Gwen watching them carefully.

Gwen was a force of nature. She was older than Aimee and utterly gorgeous. It was clear she was very smart.

She’d already figured out what was going on in this town. Something that had taken Aimee years. She felt rather stupid next to the other woman.

Dominic was a quiet guy, but watchful, careful. It was clear that he saw everything, and that he was really protective of Gwen. He helped her into the front passenger seat while Ammo reached for the back door.

Before she could climb in, Ammo grabbed her, lifting her into the back seat of the vehicle. Then he grabbed the seatbelt and pulled it across her, buckling her in, then checking to make sure it was tight.

That was new.

Sure, he’d always opened doors for her, but this was a whole other level.

Without a word, he backed away, shut the door, and walked around the back of the car. Gwen turned to look at her with a smile.

“I take it from the look on your face that that was a surprise,” Gwen said. “You should get used to it.”

Huh? What did that mean? She didn’t understand. She had a feeling that something was going on that she wasn’t quite following.

But then Ammo and Dominic climbed in, so she couldn’t exactly ask Gwen what she meant.
