Not yet anyway.
“Poor thing was really upset and jumpy. I listened to her side of the story and spoke to Matthew Briggs. The sheriff didn’t even bother to talk to him, or he would’ve discovered that he had cameras in his office. Although I have a feeling without a few threats he still wouldn’t have let you go. I’m going to enjoy taking down Sheriff Willoughby and his staff.”
“Good,” Ammo said. “While you’re at it, do you think you could take on a few other issues for me? Well, they’re really for Aimee.”
“You mean the fact that her ex was signing her names to documents and racking up debt?”
“Yeah. That.”
“Don’t worry, Zander’s already got me on the job. I’ll take care of this.”
“Are you going to stick around for long?” Ammo said.
“Probably just until tomorrow,” Gwen replied. “I’ve got to get back for a case, but I want to do a little bit of asking around town.”
“Just be careful.”
“Don’t worry. Dominic has my back, like always.”
Yeah, Dominic did have her back, just like Ammo was going to have Aimee’s back, because he’d come to a decision in that jail cell.
There was no leaving her. There was no walking away.
He had feelings for her. Yes, he was admitting to actually having feelings.
Last night, sitting there, not knowing if she was all right, if she was eating and sleeping . . . it had been hell.
Ammo walked into the main reception area and saw her standing there. Her hair was a mess. Her clothes were all wrinkled and oversized. There were dark marks under her eyes.
She looked like a disaster.
A beautiful, fragile disaster. And then she started running toward him, relief clear in her face as she threw herself at him, and he wrapped his arms around her, because he’d made his decision.
He wasn’t ever letting her go.

Aimee clung to him. She could feel herself shaking, and she tried desperately just to hold herself together.
She couldn’t fall apart in the sheriff’s department, not in front of all these people who would love to see her break down.
But she’d been so worried that they weren’t going to be able to get Ammo out of jail, that something might happen to him in there. Who knew how corrupt the sheriff’s deputies were? What if they’d hurt him? She’d had no way to protect him from out here.
Like you could protect him anyway.
You can’t even protect yourself.
All of her troubles were weighing down on her, and she didn’t know what to do next.
Don’t think about that right now. Just get him out of here.
He had to be traumatized by a night spent in jail, and it was all her fault. Kelly-Anne hated her. She was just trying to get revenge on her by going after Ammo.
“Hey, you’re trembling,” he said. “What’s wrong? Did something happen while I was in jail?”
He drew back and stared down at her. She knew she couldn’t tell him about her encounter with the guy last night.
He’d made it very clear what would happen to Kirsten and Ammo if she did that. She couldn’t risk anything happening to them.
