I took the glass because I was, in fact, thirsty. I took a long drink from it and the cold water soothed everything else that the warm cloth he was using on me had not. When he finished wiping me, he set it down and asked, “Did I hurt you?”

I quickly shook my head. “No. I’m perfectly fine.”

His gaze stayed trained on me for a beat too long. It was only when the phone began to ring again that he moved to where his jacket had fallen, retrieved his phone, and checked the screen. His expression gave away nothing, but the fact that he’d answered it at all told me everything.

“Yes,” he said into the phone. One word. No preamble, no greeting, no bullshit.

A pause. I watched him from the bed, my body still humming with the aftershocks of what we’d just done. I noticed the way his posture changed when he heard whatever was being said on the other end and wondered what was being said.

“Say that again.”

The room was so quiet I could hear the faint sound of whatever voice was responding. Cain’s gaze moved to the far wall, then to the window, then to me.

“When?”

Another pause.

“Who else heard it?”

I pulled my dress down and sat up, trying to arrange myself into something that didn’t look exactly like what I was: a woman who’d just been fucked into another dimension. My legs were still unsteady. I pressed my knees together beneath the fabric and hated that the motion sent a tremor through me.

“Okay, we need to enact Plan B.”

Plan B? What the hell was that? Heck, what was Plan A?

Cain ended the call without another word and stood there with the phone still in his hand, staring at nothing. I waited a beat to see if he would say something, but he didn’t.

“Who was that?” I asked.

He didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he set the phone on the nightstand and his gaze moved over to me once more. He took the opportunity to run a hand through his hair before he answered.

“We will be getting married.”
