I don't answer.

The door opens a few inches.

Bishop looks inside. “Hey.”

He smiles when he sees me.

Then the smile disappears. “What's wrong?”

I look at him. Really look at him. The man I've loved for longer than I want to admit. The man who kissed me in my parents' bathroom tonight and told me he didn't want to hide me.

The same man who just told my brother there was nothing between us.

“Did you mean it?”

He frowns. “Mean what?”

“What you told Declan.”

His face changes.

And there's my answer.

“Laney—”

“Nothing's going on?”

He steps inside and closes the door. “Becks, let me explain.”

I laugh. It sounds awful. “Please do.”

He drags a hand through his hair. “Declan caught me off guard.”

“So you lied.”

“I was trying to keep him from figuring everything out on Christmas Eve.”

“By pretending I'm nothing to you?”

“That's not what I was doing.”

“It's exactly what you were doing.”

He looks away.

I climb out of bed. “Do you know what the worst part is?”

He doesn't answer.

“This isn't even the first time.”

His eyes find mine.

“North Pines.”

He goes still.

“That night,” I continue. “The formal. I heard you.”
