“Get the fuck out of here, Dorrian, before I snap your fucking neck,” Kain grumbles.
“Where is Cassie?” I finally cut in.
Dorrian’s shoulders slump. He looks defeated.
They have her too.
“They have her.”
My stomach twists, that sick feeling returning immediately.
“What do you mean they have—”
“Dorrian!” Heath’s voice barks from the entrance to the cells.
Without a single word, Dorrian retreats, leaving us in the dark and silence again. His confession hovers over us heavily.
“Fuck,” Kain whispers and slumps down.
“Kain,” I whisper, and the clinking stops.
Rats scuttle across the floor, making me squeak and pull my legs into me, grinding my teeth with the radiating pain that accompanies the movement.
Neither of us speak again.
If everything he says is true, our fate lies in Dorrian’s hands.
Time is ticking.
My entire body is numb from the cold, and I don’t know when the last time I moved was. Too scared of that pain in my tailbone. I can’t move about freely to test for broken bones. I’m paralysed; helpless should anyone return.
“Jordie?” a broken whisper comes.
“Yeah?” I rasp through a rough throat.
“There was only thing I was living for—”
“Kain…”
“It was you—”
“Why does this sound like a goodbye?”
“There wasn’t a chance I was leaving this earth without making sure I could spend the rest of my life with you. Even if in the end you still hated me.”
My eyes burn, my throat squeezing. “Kain, don’t make this sound like a goodbye.”
He huffs a laugh. “They have us, little devil. And Dorrian isn’t coming to help… He’s had twenty-three years to do something and I don’t believe his bullshit excuses. He. Is. Not. Coming.”
I finally break, a whimper escaping my mouth as my head falls to my chest. “We can still make it out of here.”
Drip. Drip. Drip.
He goes silent. I try to wiggle my fingers, but what use is it?
Then Kain starts grunting as chains crash against stone.
“Kain? What are you doing?”
