Almost is Never Enough

“Oh?” I ask, arching a brow. “Am I?”

He nods. “I want seconds.”

“Well, you’re still inside me,” I point out and he laughs as he slips out of my body and I glance down.

He’s wearing a condom.

I have no idea when he did that but it doesn’t shock me.

This man takes my safety too seriously to not put on a condom even if I’m too lost in my desire for him to remember it.

“Do you have to work in the morning?” he asks as he pulls the condom off and tosses it in the trash. I nod.

“Yeah. I’m opening tomorrow.”

He grabs his boxer briefs and nods. “Let’s get you home then.”

We get dressed in silence, sharing heated looks every so often. It’s not uncomfortable. Just like everything else with him, it feels so damn easy. And when we’re both dressed, he takes my hand and threads his fingers through mine.

The fight is in full swing when we step out of the trailer, giving the crowd something else to focus on besides Dalton and I. A couple people glance over at us but as soon as they make eye contact with Dalton, they are immediately turning back to the ring.

It’s so damn intriguing the way they all treat him like some kind of king here.

And it makes me want to see him fight.

When we get back to his bike, he steps in front of me and puts the helmet on my head.

“Can I come to one of your fights?” I ask and he freezes, the straps of the helmet in his hands as he meets my eyes. He searches my face, his brows furrowed.

“You want to see me fight?”

I nod. “I do.”

“I’ll think about it.”

He leans in and presses a kiss to my lips before he goes back to securing the helmet to my head. Once we’re ready to go, I climb on the bike first and then he gets on. The rumble of the engine is familiar at this point and I settle into the ride, holding Dalton and thinking over our evening together.

Everything about tonight just felt natural.

Neither one of us is ever forcing things or putting on a show.

It’s just so damn… easy.

I keep coming back to that word but I don’t have any other way to describe what it’s like to be with Dalton. It’s just easy. And for some reason, that thought makes something twist uncomfortably in my chest.

But that’s exactly what I need.

And that scares the hell out of me. Not because of him, nothing about Dalton has ever scared me, but I’m terrified of how badly I’m beginning to want this.

Because the truth is, I still don’t have anything to offer this man and I’m becoming more and more convinced that he deserves the world. This man is kind and loyal and… good. Like, down to his very marrow, he’s a damn good man and I don’t have a fucking thing to offer him.

As we pull into the alley outside my apartment, tears sting my eyes.

There’s the truth of it. He deserves the world and I can’t give that to him.

He pulls to a stop in front of my apartment and I frantically blink the tears from my eyes, sucking in a breath to try and get myself under control.

Tonight was incredible.
