Almost is Never Enough

And she sure as hell doesn’t have a right to “warn” Lennon of anything.

She nods, swallowing hard. “Yeah, I did.”

“And you got jealous?”

“I…” Her mouth snaps shut as she stares at me and her chest heaves. “Okay, yeah, I did. Because how could you just dump me and then move on with her immediately.”

“So you tried to drive a wedge between us.”

Again, not a question.

Her nostrils flare and she presses her lips into a line.

“Yeah, I did. It wasn’t fucking fair that you just dropped me like garbage and then you get to have her,” she seethes, her hands shaking as she pulls them into her lap.

And there it is.

I nod, leaning forward and meeting her eyes as I flash her a cold smile. “It didn’t work.”

“Fuck you, Rooster,” she gasps, practically throwing herself out of the booth. “God, you’re such a fucking asshole. Shouldn’t you fucking be at the hospital right now instead of taunting me?”

Gotcha.

I tilt my head and narrow my eyes. “Now, how would you know that, Leigh-Ann?”

Her mouth opens and closes like a fucking fish before she lets out a huff. “Fuck you, Rooster.”

“Never again, Leigh-Ann,” I goad, flashing her a full fucking grin. She lets out a growl and turns towards the door, stomping as best she can with her injured knee. As I watch her shove the diner door open, I pull my phone out of my pocket and dial Max’s number.

Jumper slides into the booth across from me just as Leigh-Ann reaches the parking lot, making a beeline for her car. She’s mumbling to herself and she looks like a fucking maniac.

“Rooster?” Max answers. “Do I need to come get you from jail?”

I bark out a laugh. “No. I have a suspect for you. Leigh-Ann Gaudreau.”

“I see,” he says. Silence stretches between us for a moment. “And why am I looking into her?”

“She’s a girl I was hooking up with shortly before I met Lennon. Derek is behind trying to run Lennon and I off the road—”

“I know,” he says, cutting me off. “Streak called Storm as soon as you hung up on him.”

I nod. “Okay, good.”

“How is this Leigh-Ann connected to all this?” he asks and I suck in a breath.

I don’t know how it all fucking fits together yet but I’m sure it does.

Will he believe me though?

“If Derek was using Lennon’s ex to target us, I thought why wouldn’t he also use someone from my past.”

He sighs. “Yeah, okay. I can see how that makes sense. Do you have any evidence for me?”

“Yeah,” I huff, turning to look out at the parking lot. Leigh-Ann is sitting in her car now with her phone pressed to her ear as her free hand wildly waves around.

Who in the fuck are you talking to, Leigh-Ann?

“I just met with her. She’s walking with a limp and has a nasty looking cut on her arm. Oh, and she knew all about Lennon and asked if I should be at the hospital right now instead of grilling her. She’s sitting outside of the diner right now and she’s on the phone with someone. Might be worth looking into.”
