I nod, keeping up the faux concern, despite my growing suspicions. “Did you go get it checked out?”
“Oh, no,” she murmurs, waving a hand through the air. My gaze locks onto a long, deep cut on her forearm.
Strike fucking two.
“I’m sure it’ll be fine,” she adds, her smile looking a little unsure. I’m watching everything—the way her eyes dart around the room, the way she swallows too hard and her constantly brushing that hair behind her damn ear.
She’s nervous as fuck about something.
“Well, make sure you take it easy.”
God, I really couldn’t give a single shit if she takes it easy but I need her to lower her fucking guard before I question her about Lennon.
“I heard you wanted to talk,” I say, flicking my eyes in Jumper’s direction before returning to her and she smiles, nodding. She glances over at him as well, a tiny bit of relief flooding her face.
“Yeah, I did.” She fusses with her hair again, trying to tame it behind her ear as she sucks in a breath. “I didn’t like how we ended things.”
I tilt my head, studying her. “What do you mean?”
“Oh, just the whole thing felt weird to me.” She shakes her head, her gaze locked on her hands as they splay out on the table. I arch a brow.
Why are you so nervous, Leigh-Ann?
“In what way? I felt like I was pretty clear.”
“Rooster,” she sighs, looking up at me. “It was more than you’re making it out to be and if your feelings changed, that’s fine but at least give me the dignity of telling me the truth.”
Bullshit.
We both know damn well it was meaningless sex and nothing more. I don’t understand why the hell she’s been trying to twist the narrative ever since I ended things with her.
I stare at her, chewing on the inside of my lip.
What I want to say is right on the tip of my tongue but I still have a mission here.
Finally, I release a breath and nod. “Okay, Leigh-Ann. You’re right. My feelings did change and I wanted out.”
“And there was someone else.”
It’s not a question.
She already knows about Lennon.
Hell, she tried to ruin us the night of the fight.
“Yeah, there is someone else.” I pause, watching her face carefully. “But you already knew that, didn’t you?”
Her eyes widen and she sucks in a breath. “What do you mean?”
“I mean,” I say, trying like hell to keep the bite out of my voice. I’m not entirely successful. “You talked to Lennon at my fight. Tried to drive a wedge between us.”
She blinks four times in rapid succession as she falls back into the booth seat. “N-no. I just… I just wanted to warn her. Girl to girl.”
“So you saw me with her at the fight?” I ask, resisting the urge to slam my fist on the table.
Fuck her.
She doesn’t fucking know me.
