“Lennon,” I growl, shaking my head. Her and I need to have a long conversation about her safety but that can wait for later.
As soon as we’re home.
I step into her apartment and jerk to a stop.
The vase of fake flowers that Calvin had sitting by the door is on in pieces on the floor, shards of pottery scattered in every direction.
Shit.
Did she knock it over?
“Lennon?” I call.
No answer.
I take another step into the apartment, scanning the kitchen. One of the cabinet doors is wide open and there is a broken glass lying on the counter.
The fuck?
My pulse kicks as I turn to look at the living room. The couch is at an odd angle and the blanket that was draped over the back of it is laying on the floor. It almost looks like there was a struggle…
“Lennon!” I yell down the hallway, breathing heavily as I clench my fists at my side.
You don’t know anything yet.
Calm the fuck down.
Glancing toward the hallway, I suck in a breath.
Fuck.
Is that blood?
My heart thunders in my ears as I begin slowly walking down the hallway, finding more destruction along the way. A piece of art on the wall is skewed, hanging from the corner of the frame precariously and another frame is face down on the floor.
Something crunches under my shoe when I take another step and I pull my foot back.
More broken glass.
“Lennon,” I yell down the hallway, my shaking hand bracing myself on the wall as I step around a splatter of blood.
My stomach churns.
Fuck.
Fuck.
Fuck.
“Answer me, baby.”
I reach the bend in the hallway and turn toward the door that leads to the bakery.
And then I see her.
She’s laying on the floor on her stomach, her arm stretched out above her head like she was reaching for the door. Like she was reaching for help.
“Lennon,” I whisper, my voice sounding hollow. Everything in me is screaming to go to her but my feet feel rooted to the floor. I’m stuck for one torturous second before I finally move, rushing over to her and dropping down to my knees at her side.
