Almost is Never Enough

So why is there this tiny little tendril of fear twisting in the back of my mind?

Maybe I just need time.

All of this has happened so damn fast and with all the new information I learned last night, it’s understandable why my head is spinning.

My thoughts turn to everything Dalton shared with me last night and I let out a sigh.

It’s odd.

Knowing that Owen was the one who drugged me at Voodoo is fucking violating. I’m so goddamn angry I think I could finish him off myself. But, at the same time, there is this sense of relief in finally having the truth. There is no longer this big, bad unknown hanging over my head.

Owen has been behind all of this.

That is unsettling.

The man I knew, the man I spent two years of my life with was different. I never would have thought him capable of anything that he’s done over the past month but maybe I never really knew him at all. Did I miss the signs? Was the truth of who Owen is staring me in the face this whole time and I just missed it?

I turn to the bedside table where my phone is.

Morgan.

I need to call Morgan.

She’s the only other person who knew Owen before all this so maybe she can help me make sense of it. Or, at the very least, tell me I’m not crazy.

Jumping out of bed, I grab a t-shirt out of my duffel bag and pull it over my head, forgoing a bra. What is left of yesterday’s panties are laying on the floor and I roll my eyes.

Dalton is going to need to start replacing them if he keeps insisting on tearing them off my body.

Once I’m semi-dressed, I climb back into bed and grab my phone off the nightstand, pulling Morgan’s contact info up as I lean back against the headboard.

I press the button to video call her and hold my phone up in front of me. After the third ring, her face appears on my screen.

“Lenny!” she squeals, a giant grin on her face. “What you been up to, baby boo?”

I let out a laugh and shake my head at her. “Baby boo?”

“Yeah,” she answers with a shrug, that damn grin still on her face. “I figured I’d try it out. Why? You don’t like it?”

“It’s… different,” I tell her, running a hand through my hair to try and bring some semblance of order to it as I catch sight of myself in the corner of the screen. “And to answer your question, I need your help.”

She was fiddling with something in front of her but at my words, her head whips in my direction.

“You know I’m always here for you, babes. What’s up?”

Letting out a sigh, I start explaining everything that has happened since I left Owen - him showing up in the bakery, standing outside my apartment, cornering me at the street fair before I tell him what Dalton learned last night.

“Motherfucker,” she hisses, jumping out of her seat. She begins pacing back and forth in front of the camera. “I can’t fucking believe this asshole. How fucking dare he drug you!”

I nod. “This is what I need your help with, Morgie.”

“What do you mean?” she asks, stopping and coming back tot he camera. “You need me to murder him? ‘Cause I’m so fucking on board with that.”

A laugh bubbles out of me as I shake my head. “No. I mean… did I miss something? Am I just a moron who couldn’t see who he really was this whole damn time?”

“Oh,” she sighs, plopping back down into her chair as she looks past the camera for a moment. “Well, I can’t speak to how he was acting there because I wasn’t there to see any of it but I never would have thought him capable of all this.”

I release a breath and nod.
