Almost is Never Enough

“Fine.”

He leans in and steals another quick kiss before rolling me back onto the mattress. “There’s my girl.”

I watch as he climbs out of bed and I’m immediately distracted by his broad shoulders and his ridiculously built back.

God, he’s so fucking hot.

I never really stood a chance, did I?

He scoops his jeans up off the floor and I scowl as he begins pulling them on.

“Are you not going to shower?”

“No time,” he says, shaking his head. His gaze trails down to my chest and my nipples pebble as he looks at them, licking his lips. “I’ll shower with you when I get back.”

“You’re going to smell like sex,” I tell him and he shrugs, a grin on his face as he finishes pulling his jeans up his legs.

“And?”

I roll my eyes. “And everyone will know what we’ve been up to.”

“Yeah,” he says, barking out a laugh. “Cause they all think I’m a virgin, baby.”

Reaching behind me, I grab a pillow and throw it at him. “Doesn’t mean you need to advertise it.”

He laughs as he grabs the pillow before it can hit him, tossing it back onto the bed. As soon as he has his jeans buttoned, he crawls back onto the bed until he’s hovering over me.

“Maybe I want everyone to smell you all over me.” He leans down and nips at the swell of my breast. “Maybe they need to know I’m a taken man.”

I melt.

There is no other way to describe it because when he says shit like that, I’ll give him whatever he asks for. Shaking my head, I give his shoulder a playful shove.

“Stop trying to butter me up and go to church.”

He leans in and presses his lips to mine for a quick kiss before he pulls away and climbs off the bed again. “Yes, ma’am. You better be waiting here for me when I get back.”

“I will be,” I tell him, watching as he grabs the t-shirt he tossed to the floor last night and pulls it over his head. “Baby, that t-shirt has blood on it.”

He glances down and winces.

“Shit.” He yanks the shirt back over his head and walks over to the dresser before pulling out a black t-shirt in an identical style. “Good call.”

The old t-shirt gets tossed towards the small trash can in the corner of the room before he pulls on the new one. His cut goes on over that and then he’s sauntering back towards the bed. He steals another quick kiss before he turns for the door.

“Be back soon, baby.”

“Try not to beat anyone up today,” I call after him and his laughter echoes through the house, so warm and so carefree. It makes my chest ache in the best way as I fight back a smile.

“No promises.”

I sigh, leaning back against the headboard as the front door opens and closes downstairs. My gaze sweeps over the room and now that I’m alone, his question from last night pops into my head again.

Here’s the thing.

I want to say yes.

I’m comfortable here, in his house, with him. Dalton makes me ridiculously happy. He makes me feel safe in a way that I’m not sure I’ve ever felt before.
