She’s lying on the floor, her arms at her side.
Her eyes are closed.
And I can’t tell if she’s breathing through the feed.
My heart scrambles into my throat and my stomach rolls viciously as I look up at the door.
I’m getting in.
My phone is shoved back into my pocket and then I use everything I have to slam my body into the door. The wood creaks and groans, splintering slightly in places but it doesn’t give.
Fuck.
Again.
My vision tunnels on the door in front of me. The only fucking thing that matters right now if getting through this goddamn door so I can check on my girl.
I throw my body into the door again and it finally gives, the cracking of the wood echoing down the alley before it swings inward. Someone might have heard that but I don’t give a fuck.
Then, I’m moving.
I clear the kitchen in three strides and turn towards the living room, finally spotting her. In the next moment, I’m on my knees, next to Lennon. I reach up, cupping her face as I scan her body for injuries.
Nothing.
I release a breath.
“Baby, please talk to me,” I plead, continuing to check her over. There may be no obvious injuries but that doesn’t mean she’s not hurt. She turns her head toward the window, away from my touch and my brow furrows.
“Go away,” she whispers.
My gut lurches and my chest aches.
What?
Go away?
Silent tears drip down her cheeks, falling to the hardwood floor beneath her and forming a little puddle. The pain in my chest intensifies as I look at her gorgeous face.
Oh, my baby.
She opens her eyes but refuses to look at me.
“Lennon, what is going on?” I ask, reaching for her again but she flinches, bracing herself for my touch. It would have been kinder if she’d fucking stabbed me. “Please, talk to me, baby.”
She turns her head, staring at the ceiling above her, but she’s not seeing it. Her mind is a million miles away. “I don’t know what to say.”
What?
She doesn’t know what to say?
I don’t know that to say.
I don’t know what to do.
And I can’t fucking fix a goddamn thing if she won’t tell me what happened.
“Just tell me what happened, Lennon.”
