Almost is Never Enough

“Was I supposed to?”

I shove my hand through my hair, my jaw clenching. “You don’t think that’s important fucking information for me to have? You don’t think I should know that my girl just fucking left?”

“Man,” he says, releasing a sigh. “No one told me that she needed to stay on the compound. If y’all want me to do a fucking job, you gotta give me all the information. Am I supposed to read your fucking mind?”

Shit.

He’s right.

Lennon wasn’t confined to the compound to keep her safe.

And I never even considered the possibility that she might leave on her own.

“No, this is my bad, Joe,” I say, nodding and tugging at my hair. “You’re right. I’m sorry about this.”

I hang up the phone and pull up Lennon’s number.

It rings three times and then goes to voicemail.

“Fuck,” I scream, throwing my phone into the wall across the room. Gear and Jumper race up the stairs, their footsteps thundering through the house.

“What happened?”

I shake my head. “She left.”

“What?” Jumper asks, his brow furrowing as his head jerks back.

“She drove right off the compound soon after you left.” I look around the room. Her bag is gone, too. My stomach drops and it feels like everything is crumbling down around me. “She fucking left me.”

Those words settle in my chest like a fucking knife. I grit my teeth and shake my head, trying to force the feeling away, trying to hold on to reality.

But the fucker is persistent.

She left me.

She doesn’t want me.

“So, go after her,” he says, looking at me like he suddenly doesn’t know who I am. I drag in a breath and shake my head.

“She left. She doesn’t want me.”

“Bull-fucking-shit,” Gear says. “I’ve been forced to be around the two of you for the last week and a half. That girl is crazy about you.”

“Look around,” I say, gesturing to where her bag was sitting and her phone charger that was plugged in next to the bed. “She fucking left and I don’t even know why.”

“Dude,” Jumper says, walking past me to where my phone is laying on the floor and he picks it up, handing it back to me. “Stop being a goddamn pussy and go find your girl. You won’t know a fucking thing until you talk to her.”

My phone pings and I glance down at it.

Lennon.

It’s a notification from the cameras I installed at her apartment. I click on it and suck in a breath when I see her tear-stained face walking up to the front door.

No.

Why is she crying?

If I thought her leaving hurt, it’s fucking nothing compared to the feeling of seeing her cry.
