Almost is Never Enough

I nod and choose two more cards before handing them over to the tarot reader. She takes them, setting them in a little stack next to her as she clears the rest of the deck from the table. Once the space is clear again, she lays the first two cards we chose on the top before she flips the other three over below them.

“The Two of Cups,” she says, pointing to the first card. “This card represents a powerful connection between two people. It’s a meeting of equals and mutual attraction but it requires both people to choose one another.”

She moves to the second card.

“The Lovers. When you put it with the Two of Cups, this tells me that this connection has the power to change the course of both of your lives. Be careful, though. Because love alone isn’t enough. At some point, you will both have to make a choice.”

She points to the last card and looks up, meeting my eyes.

“The Tower. This card represents a sudden disruption. Chaos. Something that will shake the foundation you’ve been building here.” She gestures to the rest of the cards.

“What the fuck?” Dalton hisses, reaching over and grabbing my hand, his grip tight like he think she’s going to steal me away from him.

“Don’t mistake my words,” she says, shaking her head. “The Tower card doesn’t always mean the end of something. Sometimes it means the destruction of something that was never strong enough to hold you in the first place but things can be rebuilt, stronger than they were before.”

“That’s comforting,” he grumbles, still clutching my hand tightly as he looks over at me. I offer him a smile and he lets out a sigh. I turn back to the tarot reader and she’s studying the cards on the table.

“You are two very different people,” she says, her hand drifting over the cards in front of her like she can feel them. “But that doesn’t mean you weren’t meant to find one another.”

My eyes drift to Dalton.

He’s already watching me.

“Some people come into our lives to teach us something,” she continues. “Others come to change us. To change the course of our lives in ways we never could have imagined.”

I glance back at her as her hand slides over to the Two of Cups and the Lovers.

“What is between you has the potential to be incredibly transformative for both of you. It will require trust, though. It will require you to both choose each other when it would be far easier not to.”

My stomach twists and her hand moves to the Tower.

“You will be tested. There is something coming, something that will threaten to destroy what you’ve built here.” Her hand moves to the King of Wands and the Queen of Cups. “But this does not feel accidental. The two of you were meant to find one another. What you do with that now that you have it is up to you.”

She pulls her hand back and looks up at us.

Dalton shifts in his seat again and I look over at him as he stands. He pulls me up out of my chair and looks over at the tarot reader with a nod.

“Thanks.”

Before I can even say anything, he walks out of the tent, pulling me along with him.

“Dalton,” I say, studying him as he stops and turns back to me. “What is your deal?”

He closes the distance between us and cups my cheek with both hands, searching my eyes. “Are you okay?”

“Yeah,” I say with a nod. “Why wouldn’t I be?”

“All that shit about danger and something coming.” He shakes his head. “Bullshit. Fucking scaring people to get her rocks off and make money.”

I smile. “Yeah… but did you hear the part about us being meant to find one another.”

“For fuck’s sake,” he says, rolling his eyes as he fights back a smile. “Of course that’s all you heard.”

I make a face at him. “You remember that was just supposed to be for fun, right?”

“Right,” he says, releasing a breath and pulling me into him, stealing a kiss. When he pulls back, he looks around the fair before turning to look at me again. “You hungry?”

I nod. “I could eat.”
