“F-U-N. Fun, baby,” I tell him, emphasizing it and he rolls his eyes with a sigh.

“Fine,” he grumbles, shaking his head. “Let’s get this shit over with.”

We get to the tarot reader’s tent and the inside is draped with black and purple fabric. There is a little shelf set up behind her with various crystals on it. She looks up as we walk in and offers us a smile.

“Would y’all like a reading?”

I nod, plopping into one of the two chairs across from her. “Yes, please.”

“Five card spread is twenty dollars.”

Dalton pulls out his wallet and lays a twenty down on the table in front her. She grabs it, tucking it under a velvet bag next to her before laying three decks out in front of us. One is golden with a sun and tree on the back. The second is a dark, midnight blue with a crescent moon and stars. And the third is dark green and black with a serpent and roses.

“Choose a deck please,” she says and I eye the third one before turning to Dalton.

“The green one?”

He shakes his head. “Of course it’s that one.”

The tarot reader smiles as she takes the green one and sets the other two off to the side and begins shuffling the deck, closing her eyes and taking deep breaths. When she’s finished shuffling, she lays the cards out in front of us and looks to Dalton.

“Pick one.”

He arches a brow. “Any card?”

“Which ever one calls to you,” she tells him, nodding her head. He scoffs, looking over the cards on the table before grabbing one and handing it to her. She flips it over.

“The King of Wands.”

I watch her intently as she looks up, her eyes narrowing as she studies Dalton.

“This represents someone who is very confident and passionate. You are very protective over those in need and you are accustomed to taking charge of every situation you’re in.”

Oh, that’s spot on.

She tilts her head to the side. “You have a strong presence and you inspire loyalty in those around you. That loyalty is not misplaced. You’ve earned it through the kind of man you are.”

He shifts on his chair and clears his throat. “You missed the mark on that one.”

“Did I?” the tarot reader asks, arching a brow before she turns to look at me. She gestures to the cards on the table. “Choose a card, please.”

I stare at the cards for a moment before reaching forward and choosing one off to the side. She takes it from me and flips it over.

“The Queen of Cups,” she says, looking up at me with a knowing smile. “You feel so very deeply. The Queen of Cups represents someone who is compassionate and sensitive, someone whose emotions run deep beneath the surface.”

I nod as I listen to her.

She’s not wrong.

But I don’t think I would have described myself like that.

“You’ve spent a long time convincing yourself that feeling nothing was safer for you, however. This card represents someone learning to trust herself again, someone coming into her own.”

Well, shit.

“Pick the final three cards, please,” she says. Dalton chooses one and hands it to her before turning to me.

“You get the last two, baby.”
