Me, curled up on the bathroom floor with one name echoing through my mind.
Dalton.
“I think I knew you’d find me,” I whisper, pulling back from his lips. His head jerks back slightly and he meets my eyes.
“Why do you say that?”
“I was…” I shake my head. “I was sitting on the floor… my legs were pulled up to my chest and… I just kept thinking about you. Were you waiting for me?”
He nods. “At the end of the hallway. I should have gone with you.”
“Why?”
He sighs, raking a hand through his dark hair and letting his head fall back against the wall behind him. “You only had one drink last night, Lennon.”
“What?”
What the hell does he mean I only had one drink?
Oh.
The vodka cranberry.
At the bar.
But if that’s all I drank last night then why the hell do I feel like this?
I turn to him, my brows drawn together. “What happened?”
“I don’t know yet,” he answers, his jaw flexing as he clenches and releases it. “A doctor the club works with looked at you last night and she thinks you might have been drugged but we won’t know for sure until later.”
“Drugged?” I whisper, a lead weight dropping into my stomach as I try to process his words. Fragments of the night flash through my mind again.
The flashing lights…
The pumping of the bass…
It was hot, too hot…
Dalton’s blurry face on the dance floor…
“When will we know for sure?” I ask. It makes sense but I don’t want to jump to that conclusion and freak out until we know with one hundred percent certainty.
“Doc took blood from you last night.” He shrugs. “She said the results would be back today sometime but I’m not sure.”
I nod, chewing on my bottom lip as my mind races. “What do you think?”
“Baby,” he says with a sigh. “You were really out of it. It doesn’t make sense from the one drink you had, even if the thing was all vodka and no cranberry.”
My chest heaves with each breath I take as the implications start to catch up to me.
“Why?” I meet his eyes. “Why would someone do this to me?”
He reaches up, cradling my face again. “We don’t know anything yet, baby. Let’s just take a breath until the bloodwork comes back, okay?”
“Okay,” I whisper, tears stinging my eyes. I’d love to not think about it. Truly, I would. But now that the possibilities are spilling into my head, it’s like a dam has broken and I can’t stop it. My breath hitches and I meet Dalton’s eyes as the first tear falls down my cheek.
“Hey,” he whispers, leaning in and giving me a quick kiss. “Do you feel like you could eat?”
