He leans down and seals his mouth over mine, showing me everything he just said with his lips. A throat clears behind him and we break apart. He turns and grins at my doctor, who blushes.
“We all ready in here?”
Nix looks back at me in confusion. “Ready for what?”
“They’re going to do an ultrasound and look at the baby.”
“Fuck yeah, we’re ready,” he exclaims and then adds, “Shit, sorry, Doc.”
Dr. Greene and I both laugh as she shakes her head.
“That’s quite all right. I wish all my expectant fathers were this excited.” I watch Nix while she is speaking and when he hears the word father his chest puffs out and he grins. I can’t fight the smile taking over my face at the look of pride in his eyes. How did I ever think that he would be anything but happy about this?
“Go ahead and lie back. Pull your shirt up and we’ll try to get a good look at your little one,” Dr. Greene instructs me. I do as she says, lying back on the exam table and pulling my shirt up to my chest. “You stand right there, young man, and hold her hand.”
Nix listens immediately and moves to stand by my head, grabbing my hand in his.
“Okay, this may be a little cold,” Dr. Greene says just before squirting gel on my belly.
It is cold and I jump slightly when it hits my skin. Nix smiles down at me and I shake my head at him. She presses the wand to my belly and begins moving it around. Both Nix and I direct our attention to the screen as we wait to see our baby.
“Do you see that right there?” Dr. Greene points to a little blob on the screen.
“Yes,” I say while Nix nods his head.
“That is your baby.”
“He looks just like a peanut.”
“He?” I ask. “What makes you so convinced that it’s a boy?”
He shrugs his shoulders, a smile plastered on his face. “I just know.” Something that sounds like a galloping horse fills the room and I look back at the monitor.
“That is your baby’s heartbeat,” Dr. Greene says and I stare at the screen in wonder. Tears spring to my eyes as I listen to the quick heartbeat of our little peanut.
“Oh, dear,” Dr. Greene murmurs and Nix’s gaze shoots over to her.
“What? Is something wrong?” He panics, squeezing my hand for comfort.
“No. Nothing is wrong. Do you see this here?” She points to another little blob on the screen. No way. “This is your other baby.”
“Two?”
She smiles at me and nods. “Yes. Twins.”
“Oh my God.” Lying back on the table, I look up at the ceiling and try to wrap my brain around having two babies.
“Do twins run in your family?”
“No,” I reply at the exact same time that Nix says, “Yes.” My head whips in his direction.
“Who?”
“Baby, my dad and Moe are twins,” he says, holding back a laugh.
“No, they’re not.” I picture both men. Sure, they look alike but I just thought they were, ya know, brothers.
“Yeah, they are, sweetheart.” He laughs and I shake my head at him. I can’t believe I never noticed before. To be fair though, I’ve never seen the two of them right next to each other.
