He just shrugs.
“Have you been standing at my door with food when I’m not here before?”
He shrugs again. “Can’t be right all the time.”
“Ew. Stalker,” I tease him, and he nudges me with his elbow as he grabs his own piece of pizza.
“You should just feel lucky that I’m willing to eat your disgusting pizza.”
“You shut your mouth!” I exclaim around a bite of pizza. “My pizza is delicious.”
“It’s got alfredo sauce on it, Ad,” he says, scrunching up his face like that’s the most disgusting thing he’s ever heard.
“So? I don’t like the red sauce, and you’re really gonna act all offended when there are people in this world who put little fish on their pizza?”
“Good point,” he concedes, nodding his head. “You wanna watch The Walking Dead tonight?”
“Absolutely. Just after we finish eating,” I say, scrunching up my face. I can never eat when we watch that show, and he loves to tease me about it.
He lets out an exaggerated groan and tears into his pizza. “Brains!”
“Ew!” I giggle and throw a piece of sausage at him. He smiles at me, his eyes going soft, and the mood around us shifts in an instant. Holy moly, a girl could get used to being looked at like that. I finish my last bite of pizza and clear my throat as I stand up and dump the leftover crust in the trash.
“You want something to drink?” I ask, grabbing a soda for myself. Normally, I would have a drink but after we started hanging out, I replaced the alcohol in my house for drinks he preferred.
“Yeah. Soda sounds good,” he says from the living room, and when I come out with both our drinks, he’s firing up Netflix. I set his soda on the coffee table and settle into the couch, wiggling a little until I find the perfect spot. When he gets the episode we left off on cued up, he sits down next to me, close but not touching, and pops open his soda.
“Oh, man, I totally forgot that Rick’s losing his marbles,” I say as the episode begins playing, and Trey laughs, throwing his arm across the back of the couch. We’re quiet for a while but I have a hard time focusing on the show. It’s so weird. This is exactly how we’ve watched this show for weeks but somehow, it feels different now. I’m acutely aware of where his arm is and how close it is to me, half of me begging him to wrap it around my shoulder and the other half thinking maybe I should scoot away from him a little. But how the hell do I do that without being obvious?
I’m startled by a zombie coming out of nowhere on the TV, and I jump. Trey glances over at me, a smile on his face, and wraps his arm around my shoulder, pulling me closer until I’m pressed up against his side. And despite all my bravado, I cuddle closer to him instead of pulling away. He smells amazing, and I’m dying to place my hand on his chest and feel his muscles flex beneath my fingers but somehow, I hold myself back.
It was hard enough to fight just being around him but being pressed up against him feels too right. I want to go further. I want to crawl into his lap and press my lips to his. Ever since he told me about our kiss the night of Emma’s wedding, my curiosity has been steadily growing but this is different. I can’t even explain it, and I’m having trouble fighting it anymore.
My thoughts drift back to the phone call I got yesterday, and it’s just what I needed. It gives me enough strength to stop myself but I don’t pull away either, and I don’t know how much longer I can keep fighting this.
