“A couple months.”

I stared at her. She lifted her chin slightly, already bracing herself.

“You stopped taking birth control months ago and never told me?”

“I didn’t do it because I was trying to get pregnant.”

“I don’t give a fuck why you did it!”

She flinched, but I didn’t lower my voice.

“Well, maybe you should.”

I gave a short laugh and stepped around the coffee table.

“You let me fuck you believing you were on birth control.”

“I wasn’t trying to get pregnant.”

“Do you think repeating that is going to make you sound less stupid?”

Her eyes narrowed. “Fuck you.”

I stopped in front of her.

“No, Maggie. Fuck you.” I stepped toward her. “You knew exactly what you were doing when you didn’t tell me.”

For the first time since she showed me the test, Maggie did not immediately answer. Her eyes moved away from mine.

“It’s my body.”

I laughed.

“Of course that’s what you’ve been telling yourself.”

She uncrossed her arms and gestured toward herself, the test still clutched between her fingers.

“And you were free to stop taking whatever the fuck you wanted. You were not free to make that decision for me too.”

“I didn’t.”

“You did every time you opened your legs without telling me.”

Her face reddened. For a second she looked more humiliated than angry.

“You’re fucking disgusting.”

“And you’re pregnant. Apparently neither of us is having the evening we expected.”

Her eyes filled. She wiped angrily beneath one eye before the tear could make it down her cheek.

“I knew you’d react like this.”

“Then perhaps you should’ve used that tiny bit of foresight before you stopped taking the pills.”

“I was tired of you controlling everything.”

The test was not really the beginning of this argument. Apparently Maggie had been storing up another speech.
